This beach villa in Corsica is situated in a calm residential area, on the West Coast, just 1 km from Sagone and 45 mins from Ajaccio. This charming house situated within easy reach of the beach and near shops and bars, has recently been renovated and tastefully decorated throughout. Close to Porto-Vecchio, the residential villas are ideally located and will allow you to visit Corsica, its nature, its beaches and its mountains. The possibility of historic nesting of the loggerhead turtle in Corsica has been investigated by Delaugerre (1987). According to information from the Monaco Oceanographic Museum and from oral testimony, it is thought that some marine turtle nesting may have occurred on the eastern sandy coast in the first half of the 20th century.

The outside table in the cool shade of the fruit trees cries out to entertain; you can almost smell the intoxicating mix of suncream, Corsican rose and platters of freshly cooked prawns. The interior is finest Mediterranean and effortlessly stylish with cool minimalist walls, rich terracotta floors, marble bathrooms and an elegant stone fireplace. See http://english.visit-corsica.com for the island’s hotels and campsites. Hotel Roy d’Aragon (00 33 4 8961 9002) is a classic seaside hotel in Bonifacio with doubles from E43, room only. Much of the coast of the Golfe de Porto-Vecchio and its environs is characterized by ugly development and hectares of swampland, yet some of the clearest, bluest sea and whitest beaches on Corsica are also found around here. The most frequented of these, Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, can be reached by bus from the town in summer, timetables for which are posted in the tourist office; at other times you’ll need your own transport.

There is no need to be stuck anywhere on the island, and the Corsicans speak French badly enough that no visitor need feel self-conscious. I spoke nothing but Italian for a week and managed very well. The recently refurbished rooms built in a pavilion style are bright, airy and reflect the character of Corsica with hues of blue, green and terracotta. Each has its own terrace that is staggered so that your privacy is ensured. Pass through Corsica’s unspoilt landscapes and bathe in the clear blue waters of streams, rivers and sea. The route can be undertaken with or without luggage transfer and you may choose to use hostels or small hotels with mostly private bathrooms.

Palombaggia Beach

The delightful sheltered beach is dominated by huge mounds of pink granite, even the resort’s aquarium nestles under a pile of boulders. As the tide goes out, the unusual rosy rock formations are uncovered ready for exploration. It’s a wide, wide sweep of a bay opposite a huge, barren rock – and there’s no much going on behind it either, bar the road you arrive on. BUT the water is a deep green, and very salty, so it’s incredibly buoyant – both characteristics a great source of fun for little bodies. Portigliolo is a huge arc of pure white sand, while Campomoro is more old-fashioned and boasts turquoise seas and boats bobbing past in the distance. You know you’ve arrived in this small fishing village when a whiff of pungent eucalyptus and oleander hits your nostrils.
