Grand Cayman is home to more than 600 banks. It is the fifth largest banking community in the world. Grand Cayman is by far the biggest, with an area of 76 square miles (197 km ). The largest of the islands, Grand Cayman is the home of Cayman government, many historic sites, restaurants and duty free shops. It is also the fifth largest financial center in the world. Offering a host of experiences, from petting attention- and food-seeking stingrays at Stingray City to exploring jaw-dropping drop-offs and dive sites, Grand Cayman is a watery wonderland.
Hell’s jagged black rock formations resemble their namesake. With a wide selection of high quality shops, Grand Cayman is a brand name shopping Mecca. Visit our National Museum (located a few steps away from the Cruise Ship landing) or take a break in one of the many fabulous Restaurants and Bars located nearby.
Between 1655 and 1671, it is reported that Sir Henry Morgan also paid visits to these islands. Pirates continued to sail the Caribbean under permission from their countries and were know as privateers. Resident aliens of the US who show a valid US Alien Registration Card (green card) may be permitted to enter and remain in the Cayman Islands for up to 30 days. We were staying on Seven Mile beach in the first half of our trip, which is a long beach that makes up the entire West side of the island. The main dive site is usually in the middle of the bay, also called the North Sound.
But the islands offer abundant rewards for leisure travelers, too. Boasting fine hotels, chic shopping and some of the best diving in the world, the Caymans features something for everyone. Cayman is also an extremely affluent island which boasts gourmet restaurants that rival Aspen and New York. One of our favorite dinners is going to the local fish market in Georgetown, buying fresh fish and having dinner on our patio watching the most beautiful sunset in the world. Most land in the Islands is privately owned. Every piece of land is registered and one can examine the records of any piece of land at the Lands and Survey Department, to see if there are liens, charges or other restrictions upon it. The three islands are limestone outcroppings, the tops of a submarine mountain range called the Cayman Ridge, which extends west southwest for the Sierra Maestra range off the southeast part of Cuba to the Misteriosa Bank near Belize. The islands lack rivers or streams because of the porous nature of the limestone rock. We are the original stingray-friendly watersports company on the island.
Dive, snorkel or simply splash in the warm, crystal-clear waters that are the islands’ hallmark. Grand Cayman is the largest and most developed of the three islands. It is 22 miles long, averaging a width of 4 miles with the highest point reaching 60 feet above sea-level.
