All traces of the ancient history of Francavilla were destroyed by Turkish invasions during the second half of the 1500s and bombings during the Second World War. Nonetheless, as an awesome testimony to a prestigious past, today we can admire the interior of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and view a silver monstrance which was the work of the goldsmith Nicola da Gardiagrele. A cuisine that of Abruzzo that has always been considered “poor” or better still “plain”, used to using products of a land favoured by mild weather and environmental conditions. From seafood to mountain agro-pastoral specialities, a triumph of flavours and perfumes accompanied by a glass of cool Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, fruity Cerasuolo, or full-bodied Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
Just go along motorway SS5, turn left into SS16 and you will arrive in Francavilla al Mare. The property stands at the end of this track. The region consists of 60 percent mountains and 30 percent hills; the remaining 10 percent of lowland is a narrow strip along a 100 mile coast. In years past, the chief occupations were sheep rearing, farming and fishing. After a reconstruction the modern town spread along the coast.
It is highly appreciated for its peacefulness and is a perfect starting point for many excursions, including trips into the nearby Maiella mountain parks and nature reserves. It is a relaxing and varied location, with lots of sun and sea. This is one of the special areas in the world where you can see why the ancients came here and built a city and a working society. Unfortunate for us, that infrastructure is no longer there, but we can appreciate all that went into it and why.
Carlton Hotel is one of the best choice for tour operators, travel agencies and both domestic. The Sporting Hotel Villa Maria does not cater for clients but rather for guests, each with their own exclusive expectations. And for us, satisfying these expectations means granting the right prestige to those who honour us with their custom. The new Park Hotel Alcione, refined and elegant, is surrounded by a beautiful park, few steps from the sandy beach. It is the ideal place to spend a relaxing stay.
The whole staff spoke English and were very helpful with directions (since we had a rental car) We had lunch at the hotel and it was the best 2 hour lunch we ever had! We enjoyed it so much that we went back for dinner that evening! Despite its big attractions, the Hotel Claila is a small establishment with just 16 comfortably spacious rooms each brimming with character. Traditional grandeur melds with modern comforts in the marble-clad lobby area, the airy reading lounge and the bright breakfast room. Alternatively you are able to enjoy a meal is one of the hotel’s two restaurants; Novilunio and Cantonovo. Accessible for banquets and peculiar events, both have a wealthy menu of Italian and International delicacies and characteristic dishes from the area.
