Whitehaven beach is reached only by boat. There is no accommodation so if you dont have accommodation on a boat you can only day trip – no campers. From the mainland in Airlie Beach try a spectacular skydive, take an enchanting rainforest tour, spot a platypus or crocodile, or explore the Airlie Beach culture and cuisine. Made up of around 100 islands, this nature preserve is commonly described as if a giant hand had strewn them across the water. This could be due to the fact that they used to be part of a mountain chain, which all but sank after the last ice age.
The sand is a perfect fine white tiny grain. Because of the sand’s purity, it was almost mined by the American government in the 1960s for military uses. The substance can be used for satellite dishes. At the northern end of the beach you will find the swirling sands of Hill Inlet. Hill Inlet is spectacular from the beach but the walking trail accessible from Whitehaven Beach or from Tongue Bay leads to a look out which many consider the top of the world.
