When you think of Brazil, depending on what decade you were born, you think of Rio, maybe Carmen Miranda, the beautiful mountains right next to the sea. There was always the Samba, and the South American Way, and that Girl From Ipanema. Which leads us to tell you - the beaches haven't changed, at least in beauty - for centuries.

What has changed is the level of security in and around the beaches. But let us preface that with telling you this is only around large populations like Rio de Janeiro.

For instance, in Buzios, we found no security threat and a city willing and ready to keep its act clean for the dollar tourism brings.

Where do you start when you think of Brazil, if Rio isn't all that safe? We suggest that you DO start in Rio, but make sure you are smart about your stay there. Unsafe conditions come when you are alone at night, or have something flashing around that someone might take - such as a camera or jewelry.

There are dozens of locations out of Rio that experience a safe and secure tourism operation. We visited Morro de Sao Paulo and Buzios. These two beach cities are so fun and will show you all the charm and culture that Brazil offers.

But don't stop there. Soon we're off to famous Fernando de Noronha island where this Brazilian protectorate has become a getaway for the rich and famous. It's Brazil's Galapagos, and has fauna you won't believe!

Next, we're working on a special which includes the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers. Two fresh water giants that have some of the worlds best inland beaches. Especially the Negro, with its deep, black waters and dazzling white sand beaches.

Morro de Sao Paulo - Bahia - Brazil

This Brazilian beach is tucked away on the Tinhare Island, an hour and a half off the coast of Salvador, Bahia - home to spectacular beaches in its own right. Morro de Sao Paulo consists of not one, but four beaches, each with its own personality. And the most fun part about Morro de Sao Paulo beach is the famous zip line that takes you from one of the morros or hills, right down to the beach!

The village on the island is know to have grand festas. Hotels, pousadas, and restaurants line the "Rua Caminho das Praias", or "Beach Road". It's all breathtaking, but make a mental note that the little village doubles in population in Brazilian summer - (North American winter).

Beach "One" has had summer houses on it ever since anyone can remember. Nowadays, they serve as "pousadas" or "inns" and home to surfers from all over the globe during the winter (American summer) months. The waves coming into the first beach are simply "knarly". During the summer season, treat yourself to a nice getaway with crystal-clear waters. This first beach is also home to most of the seaside restaurants. A word of caution - if you're not from Bahia, make sure you ask for "less" spicy/heavy foods.

If you're looking for excitement, head down to beach number "Two". The action never stops. Brazilian "Luaus" take place along the beach every night. There is a music merriment multi-culture like nowhere else. The younger generation, and young at heart hang out here. Don't be surprised if the parties continue till sunrise.

But that's not all. The "second" beach is home to the island's "Rodas de Capoeira". You've heard about this different form of Brazilian martial art. Once a real weapon, now an acrobatic dance, the "Rodas" takes place each day at sunset on a special stage. Just follow the crowd.

Oh, and if you get a chance, try the staircase at the "second" beach. You'll be able to look out over a few beaches to the blue waters and pristine beaches. Don't forget your camera.

On to beach three. Here you will find more pousadas and restaurants. As we make our way down the four beaches, you'll note they get progressively more quiet. But here, a special treat. If you're a diver, or even if snorkeling is a pastime, Caita Island will deliver. A large barrier reed is just off shore. Everything can be rented locally. Boat trips to other, spectacular dive sites can be arranged. The island is right off the beach - you can paddle over in a kayak.

And, finally, the "Fourth" beach. It goes on forever. Another reef, serving as a natural barrier, allows coral to form in the hundreds of natural pools that line the shore. This is nature at its best. And if you happen to peek below the surface, the "Fourth" beach provides opportunity to see some of the most colorful fish of Brazil.

Quieter than the other three, you'll enjoy the sound of the surf and gentle breezes through the hundreds of palm fronds. Take a nap, or a long walk. Watch the sailboats off shore. Dream. This is paradise.

Best Beaches searching takes us South of the Border! Wow, what can we say that hasn't been sung about Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil? Back in the 60's Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Morais penned the famous lyrics and music to "The Girl from Ipanema" about a girl they saw on this very beach. Though both have passed, the girl and beach still live on.

It's Ipanema Beach in Rio, the starting place for the Brazilian bikini, or "tanga" as it's called, along with the G-string bathing suit for men. And who could forget the dental-floss bikini? You'll still see many of all these right here on Ipanema.

Granted, it is one of the most urban beaches on the planet - but still, it's Brazil's most popular tanning spot. And, we think it's one of the best for people-watching.

Where else on the planet do you have mountains cascading down to the sea, interspersed with golden white sand beaches and tropical flora showcasing every vista? Come to Ipanema Beach to grab a bit of samba, a bit of the Brazilian flavor, and to relax among the sweeping Atlantic ocean views.

When you go, what can you expect? Beautiful weather, miles and miles of pure white sand and yes, people. The locals flock to Ipanema Beach from the suburb of Ipanema (and surrounding burbs). But you'll be able to enjoy the sound of the surf, the sun, and don't forget, "people watching". Ipanema Beach has it all - with street vendors stopping by with local favorite snacks, seafood and coconuts - so you can drink the milk right from the coconut with a straw. Don't worry, they open the coconut right in front of you.

In case you'd rather have more "space", don't think every day brings a crowd. The locals come mainly on holidays and weekends. The beach is quiet from sunrise until about 10:30 AM. For a real treat, take your camera to take pictures of the sun rising over the Atlantic. It is spectacular.

There are two sports played on Ipanema Beach in Brazil. The main one is soccer. Where there is a ball, you'll find guys and even some gals now and then, playing their hearts out at the national pastime. See if you can picture a few above.

The second sport, (not counting people watching), is beach volleyball. Remember the past Summer Olympic Games; Brazil was in its element. You will find many soccer and volleyball games going on right on the beach. Join in, or simply watch the beauty.

Now, when When you need to take a break, simply cross the Avenida Atlantica to the upscale shops, awesome eateries and nightspots. If you're into a little history, make sure you visit Rue Vinícius de Morais, and the Velloso Bar where the two greats wrote the memorable song.

On Saturday, try the local Feijoada, a spicy bean stew at the local restaurants. Plan to be in the area on a Sunday where the Hippie Fair offers the very best from local artists. This thing started back in the days of hippies and hasn't slowed. Favorite finds are Brazilian musical instruments and the Brazilian Naif paintings (primitive art). The colors are spectacular. If you buy one, the beautiful frame which costs hundreds at home, is a bargain. If at all possible, have them dismount the frame and bring it back as well. Take some of Brazil home with you. At night you'll want to visit the many cafés and bars to get a real taste of Brazil.

Then you'll know why the Girl from Ipanema still lives here.

Don't miss the cable car ride to the top of world famous Sugarloaf Mountain in the city. Unforgettable romantic vistas.

There are two cables; one to the first mountain, then another to the top of Sugarloaf.

As you ascend, look for rock wall climbers making their way to the summit.

Go on a clear day to avoid disappointment. Cloudy/foggy days will leave you nothing much to see.

Ipanema Beach is the beach to the left. Copacabana Beach is to the right.
