A blustery day at Manly Beach, Sydney

Manly Beach is one of the many beaches that line the eastern shores of Sydney both south and north of the harbor. This was a busy day in mid-January. Only a stone’s throw from Sydney, Manly Beach is a great option for getting away from the hustle and bustle of Australia’s largest city. Sydney residents often prefer it over some of the closer beaches (like Bondi ), as it’s quieter and less popular with tourists. Being counted amongst the best beaches in the world, the Manly beach is an emblem of excellent infrastructural facilities and numerous communicational possibilities. Take your pick from a comfortable ferry ride of just 30 minutes or a high-speed Jetcat drive of 15 minutes from the Sydney harbour, Manly is always just so easy to be reached from the city walks of Sydney and the airport.

Manly is a popular surfing and tourist resort, on the northern side of the harbour. It is famous for its beautiful environment, beach-front cafes and surf culture. We offer the most beautiful locations to explore Sydney Harbour by kayak. For relaxation, fitness or romance, this is the perfect setting! This walk 10km (one way) 3 hour trek is for the more energetic and takes in views from Middle Harbour to Fairlight. There are also more gentle pleasant walks to the secluded Shelly beach and North Head or to Queenscliff and the inland lagoon.

Colourful Lifesaver flags on Manly Beach

The view along the harbour is spectacular, so you wouldn’t really notice the travel time. Unless of course if you’re prone to terrible bouts of sea-sickness. Here, a track cuts up into the bush and leads toward a firewall, which marks the entrance to the Sydney Harbour National Park. Around here you’ll have spectacular ocean views across to Manly and the northern beaches (the headland farther in the distance is Palm Beach).

Although they’re easily reachable by car (just drive across the Harbour Bridge and head north along the coast), it’s much more fun to get to them by ferry. Manly Beach, with its wide swath of sand, gentle surf, and lively cafe- and shop-laden promenade, is an especially popular place to spend the day; just grab a ferry at Circular Quay for the 30-minute one-way ride (the boats run back and forth all day long; www.sydneyferries.info ).

after surfing at manly beach in a sea of blue bottle jelly fish

On the Northern side of the Harbour, it is the access point to the Northern Peninsula. This is one of Sydney’s longest and most beautiful ocean beaches. The place is near the ferry wharf so people will surely enjoy the Sydney Harbour while taking in luscious food and special drinks.

Manly also has restaurants and bars that offer Asian cuisine for people coming from the Asia Pacific. Manly is therefore the perfect destination to enjoy Sydney Harbour and the eighteen ocean beaches, coves and inlets used for swimming, sailing and surfing.

Manly also has a huge range of shopping, dining and entertainment attractions to keep all ages and interests occupied.

Lanikai Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

Lanikai Beach Oahu

When you arrive in Hawaii you are probably drawn to Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach, but Lanikai Beach on Oahu is in a class all its own. It has everything you’d expect in a beach, plus the beauty of the surrounding terrain. Most likely you’ve seen this beach before in publications or postcards and didn’t realize it was right here on the most popular of the Hawaiian Islands.

Yes, you’ll find a lot happening at Waikiki, but if you want to see something that is not too publicized in all of those tourist booklets this is something you want to plan. In fact, if you can spend a whole day here, you’ll see this beach wake up and live through a day of surf, sun and sand. Speaking of sun – make sure you bring plenty of suntan lotion! You’ll want to spend some time getting your vitamin D!

Lanikai Beach Oahu

Which beach do locals vote as best? Hands down it would have to be Lanikai off Mokulua Drive on Oahu. The beach is over a mile long and, yes, bring the camera, this is the most spectacular beach for photographs on the island.

Postcard perfect, the water is amazingly crystal clear. Couple that with the swaying coconut palms and you have the makings of a photo op you won’t soon forget.

Okay, so why is Lanikai Beach so very cool?

It’s sheltered by a wide, protective offshore reef, the kind you see in those pictures of Fiji. Picture the waves breaking far out from the shore and then gently riding into the sandy beach. And you?

You’re sitting there looking out and listening – taking it all in. For a moment your eyes close. You dream you’re in paradise. And when you open your eyes, you realize you are. What a wonderful place.

Maybe you’ve never been somewhere so spectacular. This is well worth the time and energy to find and you’ll be rewarded by the view if not the sun kissed beach and waters that make this the breathtaking nirvana it is. Many postcards have been made of the view and once here, you’ll be talking about it forever.

So the shoreline is a natural swimmers paradise. You will find kayaking and outrigger canoeing (gotta try it!), sailing and surfing all within view of this gem in the Pacific.

Or, do like the locals and just come down here for a relaxing day at the beach – tan, read, enjoy the break. This is a gem and much recommended.

Walking along Lanikai Beach

And did we mention windsurfing?

Because of the reef, wind- surfing conditions are almost always perfect.

You can try your skill by renting a board or taking lessons from the local shops, or grab that camera again for some memories to take back to the mainland.

Remember when you park your car to not leave valuables in it. Don’t encourage anyone to break into your vehicle. Have fun and play it safe. This is one beach worth coming back to every trip.

Lanikai Beach certainly is “heavenly sea” – translated from Hawaiian.

Lanikai Beach – BEACH INDEX:

  • Sand – white/gold, medium grain, soft
  • Facilities – none
  • Parking – near residences, limited but fine
  • Shade – palms and other adult trees
  • Sports – local rentals, snorkeling is awesome here
  • Three Best Beaches Recommended
  • Notes – clean, usually surf-free, beautiful small islands close by

This beach villa in Corsica is situated in a calm residential area, on the West Coast, just 1 km from Sagone and 45 mins from Ajaccio. This charming house situated within easy reach of the beach and near shops and bars, has recently been renovated and tastefully decorated throughout. Close to Porto-Vecchio, the residential villas are ideally located and will allow you to visit Corsica, its nature, its beaches and its mountains. The possibility of historic nesting of the loggerhead turtle in Corsica has been investigated by Delaugerre (1987). According to information from the Monaco Oceanographic Museum and from oral testimony, it is thought that some marine turtle nesting may have occurred on the eastern sandy coast in the first half of the 20th century.

Our family in Palombaggia beach, Corse

The outside table in the cool shade of the fruit trees cries out to entertain; you can almost smell the intoxicating mix of suncream, Corsican rose and platters of freshly cooked prawns. The interior is finest Mediterranean and effortlessly stylish with cool minimalist walls, rich terracotta floors, marble bathrooms and an elegant stone fireplace. See http://english.visit-corsica.com for the island’s hotels and campsites. Hotel Roy d’Aragon (00 33 4 8961 9002) is a classic seaside hotel in Bonifacio with doubles from E43, room only. Much of the coast of the Golfe de Porto-Vecchio and its environs is characterized by ugly development and hectares of swampland, yet some of the clearest, bluest sea and whitest beaches on Corsica are also found around here. The most frequented of these, Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, can be reached by bus from the town in summer, timetables for which are posted in the tourist office; at other times you’ll need your own transport.

Palombaggia beach, Corse

There is no need to be stuck anywhere on the island, and the Corsicans speak French badly enough that no visitor need feel self-conscious. I spoke nothing but Italian for a week and managed very well. The recently refurbished rooms built in a pavilion style are bright, airy and reflect the character of Corsica with hues of blue, green and terracotta. Each has its own terrace that is staggered so that your privacy is ensured. Pass through Corsica’s unspoilt landscapes and bathe in the clear blue waters of streams, rivers and sea. The route can be undertaken with or without luggage transfer and you may choose to use hostels or small hotels with mostly private bathrooms.

Palombaggia Beach

The delightful sheltered beach is dominated by huge mounds of pink granite, even the resort’s aquarium nestles under a pile of boulders. As the tide goes out, the unusual rosy rock formations are uncovered ready for exploration. It’s a wide, wide sweep of a bay opposite a huge, barren rock – and there’s no much going on behind it either, bar the road you arrive on. BUT the water is a deep green, and very salty, so it’s incredibly buoyant – both characteristics a great source of fun for little bodies. Portigliolo is a huge arc of pure white sand, while Campomoro is more old-fashioned and boasts turquoise seas and boats bobbing past in the distance. You know you’ve arrived in this small fishing village when a whiff of pungent eucalyptus and oleander hits your nostrils.

miramar beach florida

Miramar Beach is located between Ft. Walton Beach and Panama City Beach on the Emerald Coast of Florida. It sits right on the Gulf of Mexico and has some of the widest and whitest sandy beaches that can be found anywhere in the world. If you have never visited or driven through this part of the country you have absolutely no idea what you are missing.

The Emerald Coast Parkway which runs through this area along the coast provides some of the most beautiful scenery that can be viewed anywhere. The region has all of the first class amenities that a 5 star location would have, such as a multitude of fantastic restaurants, superb hotels and resorts, and of course stunning beach houses and condominiums that possess the most fantastic views of the ocean anybody could ever possibly imagine.

Without question there is nothing better than spending all day at the beach and then later get refreshed back at your place of lodging and enjoying some of the finest and freshest seafood in the world at one of the many wonderful seafood restaurants in the vicinity.

If water sports are you thing, then you will think you have died and gone to heaven once you have arrived in Miramar Beach. Anything and everything you could possibly imagine is right at your fingertips, including deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, scuba or skin diving, sailing, jet skiing, or even hang gliding over the ocean.

miramar sunset beach destinIf you have been searching for a place to take the family for its next vacation and you want to enjoy the beach, ocean, and sun then you certainly could do a lot worse than planning on visiting Miramar Beach. Without a doubt it is one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit and it is hard to see how you and your family will not have the time of your lives.

Kotu Beach Gambia

We became absorbed by finding birds in the deep jungle thickets and before we were a quarter of the way around the reserve it was time to leave. Each includes a small kitchenette with two electric rings, refrigerator, lounge/dining area and separate bedroom. Some of the apartments have views towards the ocean, which are available as an upgrade. Bedankt voor uw aanmelding. We hebben uw e-mail adres goed geregistreerd. This Three Star hotel has undergone a complete renovation and refurbishment. The owners and the Management have left no stone unturned to ensure customer satisfaction is at its utmost. All the other beach hotels are big, ugly and expensive.

Kotu Beach

If you don’t stay here (I suppose it fills up very quickly in season, so reservation on 497186 or fatou1@avu.org is absolutely necessary) it is also a good place to eat or drink in the evening, this is the favourite of a lot of expats. With 24 hotels to choose from we have something for everyone. From budget to deluxe, boutique to large and lively, family friendly hotels to children free properties.

We ended up again at the nightjar site near the Palma Rima, where two Long-tailed Nightjars performed wonderfully again. Actually, it was a lot more overcast than on my earlier visit, so they appeared a little earlier, giving better and more prolonged views. The layout of the hotel was pleasing with palms and colourful plants, and of course, it is situated right on the beach. One problem I did find was the lack of hot water, which seemed to appear now and then. The Elephant Terrace is a beautiful quiet area surrounded by palms and flowers next to the main hotel reception where you can take tea, coffee or a snack, read a book or just relax. We also offer an A la Carte dining in the main hotel restaurant as well as an authentic Chinese restaurant for that special evening meal.

Nice Kotu Beach!

Palm wine making-Travel down Badala Park Way from Fajaratu to the large clump of palms just prior to Kotu stream. Watch how the strong local drink is collected from the palms here by palm wine sellers. Blue-bellied Roller was also easily seen, in oil-palms along the cycle track. This is not an exhaustive list and on a two week trip there would be more time to bird the Kotu area at leisure and certainly add further species.

The central point and main area of activity is the swimming pool which is surrounded by sun terraces. During the day the terrace is scattered with sunbeds for a spot of relaxation, and at night the sunbeds are replaced by tables for . Two story houses form a wide horseshoe featuring spacious balconies or terraces allowing views of the ocean or the beautiful landscaped gardens and central pool. Utell Superior Selection – Offers the traveller quality rooms and facilities making their stay, whether business or leisure, relaxing and comfortable. Pool area was nice. It gets very dark walking across the football pitch.

If you want a relaxing week to read a book, don’t go to a resort called “FUN” It had to be the best priced resort of the year. Well under 1000.00 only because it is not right on the beach. We loved that the resort was a little out of the way; we felt we had some space/privacy which also allowed us to relax. There were some people complaining around us, but we couldn’t imagine what for- some people are never satisfied. The Bahia Principe Resort is formed by three 5 stars hotels (Tulum, Akumal and Coba) with a total of 1295 rooms, the commercial and entertainment center “Hacienda Dona Isabel” and the best variety of services in the Caribbean. A great all inclusive variety with 5 restaurants and 6 bars, sporting activities, dive, spa, horse back riding, sailing, mini-golf, professional shows, entertainment, drinks in the bars and in the disco combined with the warmth of Mexican people and an excelent personalized service.

Bahia Principe Resort Beach, San Juan

When contacted afterwards, the Bahia chain of resorts would take no responsibilty for poisoning my fiance. I would not recommend this resort to anyone, unless you would enjoy spending your vacation in a hospital of a developing country. This is not a 4 star resort it is a 3. The rooms are looking run down and the large pool needs the bottom repainted. Oh – the Sunwing rep had never visited the resort so could not verffy our story!! Lesson to learn from me: document your concerns, shout and scream unti, someone listens and signs your paper.

After arrival, the bus ride to the resort was around an hour long. It passed very quickly, though! Since they started in 1995, Outback Jeep Safari has set about showing the Dom Rep visitor the fabulous nature park that surrounds the majority of the beach resorts and towns of the Dominican Republic. The business has now expanded, but the quality and customer orientated attention to detail are as evident to day as they were when it all started. Who runs a resort with not enough keys for the safes?

As is common in Latin American countries, maintenance has not been the resort’s forte. The rooms are suffering from ten years of neglect. The majority of visitors head to Bahia Maimon for an all inclusive family holiday at one of the deluxe resort hotels, or for a romantic honeymoon or couple?s getaway, spent in splendid isolation. On holiday in Bahia Maimon you will be staying on the Dominican Republic?s north coast, which is tailored to the needs of holiday visitors, yet retains a traditional, laid back atmosphere, typical of this Hispanic Caribbean region. Ocean lovers can engage the waves with resort sports such as kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing and more. Land activities such as tennis, basketball and volleyball are also just some of the adventures that are often offered on a complimentary basis.

The two-story resort’s 532 air-conditioned guestrooms and 12 suites feature Rattan furniture, minibars, balconies, cable television, direct-dial phones, safes and liquor dispensers. For wonderful Caribbean memories, the Riu Merengue offers moderately priced packages that will surely make ideal vacations for romantic couples and other travelers. This was a must because of a lot of young adults fighting and young women screaming for help just outside our location in the resort. There seemed to be very little security guards in the area dealing with the situation. This truly Mexican resort is clustered amidst 280 acres of coconut palm trees set against a backdrop of tropical jungle, absolutely secluded on a one mile stretch of beautiful Caribbean beach front. Beckons you to spend a few worry-free days at a very special place in the Mexican Caribbean.

Legian Beach – Bali

Legian Beach, Bali

Named the United Nations of beaches, Legian Beach in Bali, Indonesia, is indeed filled with a multitude of “westerners” as well as the native Bali men and women. The difference? The Europeans and Americans are almost completely nude, whereas the men and women of the island are fully clothed from the workday. But here we see a glimpse of what Legian Beach, Bali, looks like on a typical day. It’s very different at night. Here you’ll see surfers lining up for the perfect wave, and people just hanging out. We enjoyed the thought of grabbing a beach chair and lying here listening to the surf. Isn’t that what beach life is all about? This beach has some serious wave action during the day.

There are abundant activities here that are very affordable! However this beach is not recommended for swimming due to some tough undercurrents that will sweep you under – so watch out. The beach is very wide and if the tide is right you can walk a long ways until the water actually comes to your knees. This Indonesian beach is full of people at night; the sunsets are absolutely breathtaking!

Legian Beach, BaliTo fully enjoy Legian Beach, you must visit all the shops, bars, vendors, and have an amazing amount of fun because this beach is definitely a party beach. Here, you’ll forget you’re in Indonesia, and you will get away from any worry while you play football in the sand or canoe along the coast all the while watching scantily clad Brazilian women sunbathe on the beach. Or you could lie out yourself on the beautiful brown sand underneath the cornucopia of palms that line the shore.

Legian Beach is one of the more popular beaches in Bali and because of this there will be many tourists, so don’t be surprised if you find many a friendly visitor pass you by as you walk along this wonderful beach. And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE visit the beach during a sunset, you will see nothing else like it!

Legian Beach – Bali – BEACH INDEX:

  • Sand – Brown, long and wide.
  • Facilities – All included at the nearby hotels. Plus small stands that sell various items such as chessboards.

Margate Beach, New Jersey

There used to be a nearby structure, called “The Elephant Hotel”, but it no longer exists. However, Lucy was rented out to an English family for one summer season in 1902 as a kind of giant beach cabin. Vacationers, welcome to Margate City, a town known for its landmark elephant is also a fine sandy beach vacation on the Jersey Shore. Our listings of summer houses, cottages, condos and apartments are unique vacation rentals offered by their individual owners. Margate is also the home of Lucy the Elephant, a 65-foot-high wooden elephant that looks out on the ocean. Definitely a sight worth seeing.

Hoping to draw customers to the then-deserted dunes of “South Atlantic City”, Lafferty happened on the novel concept of building this behemoth – a building shaped like an elephant. You can go and tour the inside for $4.00 – and that price goes at least partially to help finance the continuing survival of this loveable oddity.

jill jackie erin kerry manda tina jess and me at mandas 13th bday party in margate

Top-class lifeguards are on duty throughout the year and environmental education programmes are run during the holiday seasons. One can hire beach umbrellas and shaded areas are available on the beach. Classic rides from the defunct Southport amusement park have already been shipped in as well as parts of the now-demolished water chute at Rhyl.

Thanet District Council have now moved the building from the harbour wall, to a plot of land adjacent to the harbour because of the spiralling costs for a sea born building. Construction work on the project has a projected completion of December 2010. Easy access to the beach and the pools are just steps away from the building. There’s plenty of parking in the covered garage.

If you take the N2 South from Durban and follow the new toll road all the was into Margate. You will come down a short hill, keep to the left. For beaches, just a short drive out of Margate towards Broadstairs will take you to some of the best beaches on the south coast, with soft golden sand that few other places can rival. Facscinating chalk coastal features too, including a complete chalk arch stepping out from the cliff between Kinsgate and Joss Bay. Nothing impedes the views; even the most claustrophobic can feel comfortable here.

Best Beach in Bali

Offering cosy accommodation and convenient facilities, the Sanur Beach Hotel Bali is a perfect place for both business and leisure travellers. Sanur Beach Hotel is located right on the Sanur beach front and is surrounded by landscaped gardens and shaded by whispering coconut palms. The Indian food here is delicious and irresistable, and it cannot be compared with any other restaurant in Sanur claiming to serve food from the sub-continent. The setting here is more pleasant than their other two branches, and prices are reasonable. The only almost-white beaches I knew so far were Nusa Dua and Sanur, both either very shallow or with almost no waves and lots of dirt and old plastic bags in the water. Kuta/Legian is nice to swim at, but the sand is gray and you really have to watch out for rip-currents or waves that can drag you out to sea.

Beach at Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia
Beach at Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia

Sanur was Bali’s first beach resort but still retains its Balinese character and old style village ambiance. It’s also the place for some of Bali’s chic fashion shops, hot hotels and well-known restaurants. The island’s main resorts of Kuta, Nusa Dua and Sanur lie around the coastline in the south, while the most popular inland resort with holidaymakers is Ubud north of Sanur. In places like Kuta, Sanur and Nusa Dua you will find all ingredients for a perfect relaxing holiday, as there are beautiful beaches, restaurants that serve dishes from all over the world, bars, shops and sport facilities.

Beach opposite Pelangi hotel Bali
Beach opposite Pelangi hotel Bali

Well known for its quiet, palm-lined beaches, fine restaurants and shopping, Sanur is the perfect area to experience the “real Bali”. Built on 800 sqm and only a 200 metre stroll to the beach, this property offers a new level of luxury to private villas. Sanur is protected from the force of the ocean waves by a coral reef offshore, so the waves on the shore are rather small and gentle. This makes it an ideal place for a quiet family swim, wind surfing, boating and water sports. The cafe are not so far from kuta, sanur and nusa dua area. SO it’s very easy to have lunch or dinner from your stay.

This really makes Sanur a unique area and unlike most other beach areas in Bali, Sanur has stayed largely in local hands. The main street is lined with a mix of quaint little shops selling Bali knick-knacks and the trendy label clothing shops, slow paced restaurants that have a real Balinese atmosphere and various types of accommodation. Gradual and early development has meant that Sanur has grown alongside the village, with hotels located right next door to local meeting halls and Brahmanic temples. Many hotels have expansive gardens that face the ocean in a picturesque unbroken seaside promenade.

Football at sunset, Legian Beach
Football at sunset, Legian Beach

The water is also fairly safe for swimming and snorkeling as the waves break on a reef about fifty to one hundred meters from the shoreline. The pools are wonderful, the breakfasts yummy and location fantastic. Overall I think this is a good hotel just unfortunate that our cottage was so close to the road. Dining options include Wedang Jahe Restaurant, which serves international breakfast buffets and themed dinner buffets in indoor and outdoor settings. Raja’s Balinese Cuisine offers regional cuisine including its signature dish, Bebek Betutu (duck marinated in spices, wrapped in palm leaves and cooked slowly).

Rhossili Bay Beach Wales

Sitting beautifully on the Gower Penninsula near Swansea in Wales is Rhossili Bay Beach, and has been voted as Britain’s best beach. From here you can see Bristol Channel and the Carmarthen Bay waters that are normally a calming blue. This long crescent beach spans some three miles and is surrounded by hills that showcase it. It’s a favorite picnic spot for locals as well.

Close by is Worm’s Head, or “The Worm”, an islet that squirms out from the main shore and is simply breathtaking. What many do is spend a day at the beach and walk around Worm’s Head to take in the panorama. Make sure you know the tides because walking out to Worm’s Head is over a rocky area that the tide submerges. This area is largely owned by the National Trust of Britain and there are maps and tourist associations in the area to help you on your visit.

Shipwreck Rhossili Bay WalesSurfers love it here because Rhossili Bay faces the full Northern Atlantic. This means big waves, big surf. You may even catch a surfer while you visit. The sea here can be heavy or calm, depending on weather and tides. But know that there are no lifeguards out here. There are strong undertows reported, so stay out of the heavy surf.

I thought the wrecks here were pretty amazing. I love antiquity and seeing the wrecks along this coast just punctuate history and make you wonder what could have happened and why. Another amazing thing about Rhossili Bay is that tradition here says a pre-medieval village made the Bay its home. Legend says it was abandoned sometime in the 14th century. And in 1980, a storm moved enough sand out of the area here to expose some really cool remains (around Warren where the sand dunes are.) So the “tradition” proved true.

Parking here is about £2 and it’s a steep path to the beach from the lot.

Beach Index:
– Long expanse of yellowy sand which is medium grit
– Facilities are few; try the town first
– No lifeguards
– Bring the camera – Blue Flag beach and won 2010’s Best Beach of Britain

Looking for peace and quiet at the beach this season? Locals near Holden Beach, NC say it’s the place to go. Compared to the noisy boardwalks and busy surfing destinations, Holden Beach has the privacy many people thought no longer existed. What makes it so quiet is that it is kind of secluded – think “residential.” There are homes all around the shoreline and rentals pretty close to where waking up and peering out the window to the Atlantic could be a reality with a little luck.

Holden Beach, North CarolinaThat said, there isn’t much commercial development around Holden Beach, either. Might be a plus or minus, depending on whether you need to have your grocery or fast food near at hand, or can improvise. We vote for shopping before hand and bringing your goodies in a cooler for the day. Hey, it’s all good.

Who will you find at this beach?

Cayo Levantado is a place where holidaymakers and the lush vegetation vie with each other for supremacy. The boat departs at 9:30 and Cayo Levantado is gorgeous. I could have stayed there all day. No doubt, Cayo Levantado is one of the favorite places for visitors because of its tropical Caribbean island ambience. Wooded areas and coconut palms border beautiful white sand beaches, which make it an idyllic place for visitors.

With a visit to the Amber Gallery, the Brugal Rum distillery and the San Felipe fortress you will learn about the history of this oldest city on the north coast. However, a recent study has shown that all the North Atlantic schools come to mate in our waters. During January through March, about ten thousand of these amazing creatures return to this area from the North Atlantic, to nurse their young and mate. Boat excursions from the town’s port take groups just outside the bay to witness these incredible creatures frolic in the sea.

Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado

Their most popular winter rendezvous is Silver Bank, the 3,000-square-kilometer reef system approximately 70 miles north east of Puerto Plata. More than 1,500 humpbacks visit the bay, with as many as 300 present at any given time. The Humpback whales have been wintering near Samana for centuries and thousands of these whales from the North Atlantic migrate to savor the warm and clear waters and to mate and to give birth. As many as 300 whales may be present at any given time. Casual restaurants are plentiful here, many of which are owned by expats from Europe (especially France) and North America.

The natural beauty of rainforest vegetation blends with pristine white sand beaches and crystal clear water. Due to its location, it is the perfect spot to view humpbacked whales from January to March. The early Carib people called Martinique “the island of flowers,” and indeed, with plenty of lush vegetation and fragrant flora, it still is. The port city of Fort-de-France offers chic shopping and plenty of colonial history. It has rainforest vegetation, paradisiacal white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters and extremely beautiful landscape. Two main swimming pools with open-air Jacuzzis and a hydromassage swimming pool with bar; all are equipped with wooden hammocks.

The cayes are islands that are located between the mainland and the barrier reef, on the barrier reef, and on or within the barrier reef perimeters of the offshore atolls. Experience a completely different side of the island with a visit to the Dominican Alps. A day of spectacular mountain scenery, green valleys, clear streams and tumbling waterfalls. Discover a sanctuary of birds that reign over a multitude of small islands and mangroves. Explore caves covered with intricate stalagmites and stalactites as well as ancient paintings and sculptures that represent the gods of the Taino Indians native to this island.

Palm Cayo Levantado peninsula Samana Dominican Republica

If you want a truly relaxing holiday in a breathtakingly beautiful part of the island, this is the place to be. Las Terrenas is 30 minutes away and Semana can be reached by taking a short boat trip, both these resorts have bars, restaurants, shops and watersports. Gran Bahia Principe Hotel is located in Samana, one of the most night vivacious zones of the entire Dominican Republic, with bars, discotheques, music, parties, that unique warmth that is only found in this beautiful island.

Praia dos Ossos in Buzios

This beach is easy to find if you know where to look for it. Near downtown, you can walk to it after having a refreshing lunch or morning cafe. Trees hang down over this Buzios beach and homes front the road that runs in front of it. A perfect place for a sunset picture as it faces due west, Ossos is bathed in fascinating history. Don’t miss this highly recommended beach and take time to take in the peacefulness that now permeates the winding road that takes you past this beauty.

There is beauty in the fact that time passes on and we can enjoy the present. For once this calm cove, in the center of Buzios, was the scene of death.

Two stories make their rounds in the town of Buzios.

Praia dos Ossos Buzios SunsetOne, is that the Praia dos Ossos, or Beach of the Bones, got its name from the processing of whales for oil and the bones were left around the beach area. Whales were hunted in Buzios to near extinction after gold was discovered in Minas Gerais around 1720. However in 1768, the Portuguese rulers put an end to whaling, (even though we have photographs of whales on the shores of Buzios from the past century).

The second story is even more gruesome. The local Tamoio Indians became friends with the French merchants, harvesting precious Brazilwood, shipping to Europe. The Portuguese controlled Brazil at the time and had enough of the pillaging. They ambushed the Tamoios on this very beach. Or, so the story goes…

Let’s put that in the past because this beach is so stunning, you would not have seen Buzios without getting a glimpse. In the cove of Praia dos Ossos, you’ll find beautiful yachts, small fishing boats, and water taxis. The water is mirror-like, reflecting the colors of the sunset like a soft spun kaleidoscope.

Igreja Santa Ana Church in Buzios

A walk down the cobblestone road that fronts the beach is memorable. Century old ipe trees line the beach and offer a wonderful views. You’ll find a small kiosk operated out of an old boat hull right in the sand, with refreshments.

This is an excellent place to catch a sunset before walking to a local restaurant. Praia dos Ossos is central to where the business center of Buzios used to be.

The area is surrounded by commerce. But make it a point to get here before the sun sets, so you can visit the famous Igreja de Sant’Ana to the left and up a few steps. It is the oldest church in the area.

A water taxi can take you to the other nearby beaches, or bring you here. You’ll find Praia dos Ossos enchanting and romantic and well worth a stop on your visit to the Buzios peninsula.

Praia dos Ossos – BEACH INDEX:

  • Sand – medium to fine grain. Soft.
  • Facilities – only at restaurants nearby.
  • Shade – plenty. Beautiful trees at shoreline.
  • Sports – boating! Hire a ride anywhere around Buzios.
  • Notes – known as the most sophisticated beach.

Our Favorite Seychelles

The top Seychelles beaches are arguably found on the three main islands, but by no means should you be disappointed if you go looking for sandy stretches on some of the Outer Islands, such as Desroches and Fregate . Seychelles is very much a tropical paradise, and the beaches in Seychelles are ideal havens for the stressed and weary. You can also read more about Seychelles beaches on our main site. Although Mahe is the most developed and visited island its mountainous interior remains undisturbed. The islands 75 beaches are spectacular providing crystal clear water and safe swimming.

A private ferry service to Ste-Anne Island is organised by the Sainte Anne Resort (00 248 292000′ www.beachcomber-hotels.com), but this is available only to paying guests, or visitors who have booked to have lunch in the resort. In fact, some of the islands aren’t even permanently inhabited and accommodation can be found on fewer than 10. Your best bet for a budget bed is renting an apartment or bungalow, which can be rented at very reasonable rates.

While most of the islands remain uninhabited, the majority of the 80,700 Seychellois live on the island of Mahé (72,000), Praslin (6,500) and La Digue (2,000). The official and most widely spoken language is Creole, although most people also speak English and French. It was once the best and most popular beach in the Seychelles, but over the years tourists have discovered the more private and natural beaches of the smaller islands of the Seychelles. Now Beau Vallon is a very quiet beach, and the water is deeper here than most beaches. Bird Island is one of the principal nesting sites for the sooty tern and also hosts populations of lesser noddie and fairy terns. From May to November the spectacular colony of Sooty Terns can be seen raising their young.

Made up of hundreds of tiny islands and atolls, the Seychelles is pretty much in the middle of the Indian Ocean, 1,600 kms off the coast of Kenya. Getting there is easy enough – a short, four-hour flight from the UAE. The special Inner Islands New Year cruise departing on December 27 for eight-days and seven-nights is priced at $2,045 per person.

On La Digue, however, beautiful beaches can be found all around the island, of which probably Anse Patates, Anse Coco and Anse Source d’Argent are the most beautiful, all in their own way. Bounded on the other side by the curve of the island, you feel secluded. This is why year after year Anse Lazio is voted ” the best beach in the world ” by numerous travel publications and newspapers. We visited the island in 1987. Our hope is that tourism will not spoil the white fragile beaches.

Fort De Soto Park - Tampa St Pete

While we don’t agree that Fort De Soto Park is the number one beach in the United States, we do believe that it deserves the number two spot for the State of Florida. There are seven miles of white beaches among sea oats and grasses that consistently rate in the top ten in the nation. Fine grained sand that is nice between the toes. Let’s visit.

900 acres of unspoiled land is protected by the now Fort De Soto Park. There are biking and skating trails and full rentals of canoes, kayaks and bikes. The trails are well marked. The Canoe Trail spans 2.25 miles.

Fort De Soto Park - Tampa St PeteOkay, so there was never a war fought here, but there is a real fort. Built during the Spanish-American War on the largest island, Mullet Key. There is plenty for the family, too, with two fishing piers, camping areas, concession stand, bathrooms and covered picnic shelters. Pets allowed.

With Tampa, St. Pete close by, Fort De Soto is an easy choice. The beaches would be great for spending the day or a week. Just make sure you either plan on camping, or get a hotel close by.

There is an 85 cent toll on the bridge going to and from the Park and beaches.

  • Sand – medium grained white powder, soft
  • Facilities – full service
  • Shade – adult trees near some beaches
  • Sports – rentals available
  • Notes – great family vacation destination

The Beaches of Jersey Shore

When asked who has the best beaches – New York or Jersey, the answer almost always is, “No contest IMHO – Jersey Shore.” Unless you’re from New York. “Long Island’s best are the Hamptons and Montauk. Montauk is truly beautiful, but the Hamptons are overrated some say. Coney Island is truly historic and great, but rundown and dirty today.”

Until recently you didn’t hear much about the Jersey Shore in New York. But skyrocketing prices in Long Island have made the Jersey Shore an appealing option. We think the Jersey Shore has had a bad rap for too long. With beautiful beaches, and loads of fun activities for kids and families, you’ll truly be surprised at all the great choices you’ll find. We’ve got the inside scoop on the best beaches on the Jersey Shore from nearby Sandy Hook all the way south to Cape May. But if you’re thinking about spreading the word far and wide, fuhgeddaboutit. Let ‘em have their Hamptons–this’ll be our little secret, capisce?

Beach trip with Lisa to Sandy Hook (June 18, 2005) 006

Dip your toe in the beauty of the Jersey Shore with a trip to nearby Sandy Hook. Just a forty-minute ferry ride from the Wall Street area (SeaStreak.com), the seven-mile stretch of spectacular ocean and bay beaches are excellent for surf casting, swimming, and relaxing on the sand. Since Sandy Hook is actually a National Park, there is no beach town or commercial community–so pack a picnic lunch and be prepared for an old-fashioned day in the sun (the Inlet side/western shore is sans lifeguards, rest rooms, food or beverages), or drive down to Sandy Hook, then spend the night in Highlands, a quiet town with loads of great restaurants and outdoor activities, as well as hotels and cottages with gorgeous views of Sandy Hook. Kids may get a kick out of touring the Highlands’ Twin Lighthouses and maritime museum as well.

Local and national reaction to the attacks involved a wave of panic that led to shark hunts aimed at eradicating the population of “man-eating” sharks and protecting the economies of New Jersey’s seaside communities. Resort towns enclosed their public beaches with steel nets to protect swimmers. Scientific knowledge about sharks before 1916 was based on conjecture and speculation. The attacks forced ichthyologists to reassess common beliefs about the abilities of sharks and the nature of shark attacks.

The beach in Spring Lake looking south toward Point Pleasant, NJ

Boardwalks in summer have a way of dismantling people’s inhibitions, with their heady doses of sugar, heat, carnival game taunts and frothy drinks. So it is at Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., where, with a spin on the Super Himalaya and a little bumper-car action, the day can reach high kitsch. Day-trippers who venture away from the Boardwalk won’t be disappointed either; the downtown has been spruced up in recent years.

Jenkinson’s Beach gets crowded, so arrive early. The vibe is friendly; Point Pleasant attracts families with children in droves. The beach offers outdoor showers and a few changing rooms. Food and nonalcoholic drinks in plastic containers are allowed. As with most beaches on the Jersey Shore, it costs money to get your toes sandy ($7.50 for adults on weekends, $6.50 on weekdays; $2 for children 5 to 11; $8 for an umbrella, $7 for a chair).

Point Pleasant Beach, NJ

High season at the Jersey Shore begins on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and ends on Labor Day. June can be a bit rainy and chilly at night, especially early in the month, but the weather is most often sunny and warm by July. Locals revel in September, when it’s usually temperate but the crowds are gone. Fall foliage season is a great time to visit as well. Winter is cold and many seasonal businesses close once the big chill hits, but there are many festivals and beautiful decorations around the holidays.

The summer months in New Jersey usually have warm to hot days and temperate nights, where a light jacket is often a good idea, especially near or on the water. Although temperatures average between 61 and 75 degrees, no month is immune from the occasional rainy day or two. You’ll need a jacket once fall comes and the winter months can get frosty.

Praia da Azedinha

You don’t just stumble onto something like this, unless you’re in Buzios. We had no idea what “pretty beach” meant until we actually took the trek down the rock trail to this spectacular shore that faces almost due west. These beaches were known in the ’70’s as hangouts for hippies, and Rio is home to many an old hippie. But those days are gone and yet there is an air of peace and love about this beach that we didn’t find anywhere else. Perhaps the hippies knew something we didn’t.

Imagine walking down a stone trail. Branches of yellow poui trees shade you as you walk past one breathtaking beach, to the best beach this part of the country has to offer.

This is Azedinha Beach in Búzios, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Praia da Azedinha Beach, Buzios BrazilYes, it’s small, but most prefer it that way. The right amount of sand, rock, sun, shade – God’s handiwork humbling man’s best. Unbelievably clear water, sandy bottom until around 10 feet. None of the row upon row of umbrellas blocking your view.

And, what a view! Because of the rock formation and the nearby cliffs and hills on the horizon, you immediately have a feeling of protection, of your own, personal beach. Rock formations right on the beach make it perfect for changing, putting on shoes, setting up your little spot to enjoy this piece of paradise.

Because of the slope of the sandy bottom, Azedinha is a warm beach, but not hot. Gentle waves provide three important things. They provide a good flow of water through the area. They bring just the right amount of sand up to the beach from the bottom. And, they keep the water temperature pleasant.

Quasi-natural pool, Azedinha Beach, BuziosBut God didn’t do everything. As if to invite man to participate in this natural wonder, a rock cropping runs perfectly into the water from the beach. Long ago, in response, men closed off the sea side of the ridge creating a perfect pool – calm and refreshing, as wave water flows through the cracks. The sun heats the water and because of the rock bottom, the temperature is at least 10 degrees higher than the ocean. Soothing? Romantic? Perfect.

Praia da Azedinha’s pool-like nature makes it top choice for families with small kids. There are no drop-offs, or sea anemones to step on. And the fact that you have to walk a half-mile to get here keeps the not-so-serious beach goers enjoying the easy-access popular spots.

Azedinha and Azeda Beaches in Buzios

Getting here is a fun adventure in itself. Check out sister beach Praia da Azeda for directions. You descend a path off a cobblestone road. Down twelve granite steps and along the rock path you’re at Azeda Beach. Now, just past Azeda, along a rock trail overlooking crystal, clear water, you come to Azedinha (on the left).

Ipe Brasileiro, BuziosAzedinha Beach is a must see. As always, pictures don’t do it justice. Take a towel, wear your bikini/bathing suit, and bring your camera. And leave your stress behind.

Well, next – a cove that looks like a horseshoe is the most sophisticated in all of Buzios. And wait till you see its twin sister! Coming up! >>

Beach Index:

  • Sand – medium grain, soft from local rock, no shell
  • Facilities – none. Must go back to Praia dos Ossos commercial area.
  • Shade – perfect mix of shade and sun by local trees and rock cliffs.
  • Sports – great snorkeling, little coral but good variety of marine life, great diving.
  • Notes – crowded during New Years, Carnaval, and Easter weekend. Local water taxis service the beach. Drinks available from local vendors.
