There is a lot to do in Cozumel from diving (the most popular reason to come) to exploring this island off the Yucatan Peninsula. If you are at all into diving or snorkeling, Cozumel is the best option for you for something with a great nightlife and world class sight-seeing, “underwater.”
We love how it’s so close to Tulum, where the ruins are of the Mayan temples and one of our favorite beaches of all time. You can get a boat to take you across the the Isla da Mujeres and spend your time at that beach - or visit one of the few white gems here.
And we must go back to Tulum, take pictures, enjoy the brilliant white sand and see the ruins. Dream. Ah, yes - but let’s get back to Cozumel and its own set of ruins and beaches and spectacular diving!
We visited Cozumel first of all in 1994 and were looking forward to seeing this airplane underwater in Cozumel that we had heard was used in a James Bond movie. Turns out that a 40 seater aircraft was intentionally sunk as part of a disaster movie that, well, nobody ever saw because it was never released. It’s a Corsair aircraft and until this day it’s a fun dive site to go visit.
Cozumel is also a fun Spring Break destination with as many bars as hotels - well, almost - and something for everyone at that age group - dancing, disco, drinking and partying through the night. If they come for that, the beach has to be saved for one day… right?
English is spoken by just about everyone here on Cozumel. You can rent a car or walk - it can be a long-haul if you plan on visiting anything other than your hotel. And speaking of that, hotels are on the side facing the mainland, and the rocky shore with spectacular views only afforded if you have a rental car, lie on the Caribbean Sea side.
You’re in the tropics here and the weather is so like tropical that you will notice the humidity and heat. This island has been affected by hurricanes as well, but not like Cancun. Still, keep an eye out for large storms that turn into hurricanes over the Atlantic as they leave African waters.
If you’re not into diving but want that experience, snorkeling can be just right for you. There are some great lagoons to visit on the island where you can snorkel your hearts’ delight.
Visit Chankanaab - the island’s beautiful natural lagoon that offers both great diving just offshore and snorkeling in 10 - 20 foot water. To make sure you don’t come when the cruise ships bring in their load of passengers, call the lagoon from your hotel.
Another interesting thing to do that we heard a lot of people talking about is the Mayan Steam Lodge. It is a place where you can sweat and experience a totally different “attraction.” It’s more of an experience than an attraction. Many people find it to be liberating and one of the best things to do on Cozumel. Strange? Check it out.
