Los Roques is amongst the very best of the Caribbean islands, situated 160km North of the central coast of Venezuela. Made up of a chain of 40 coral islands, along with hundreds of smaller islets, sandbanks and flat sandy cays. Los Roques is a place to rest and be delighted with comfort and class. Ideal place for fishing, diving and snorkeling. Los Roques is primarily a bonefishery, but opportunities for snook, baby tarpon and permit are good during certain times of the year. Los Roques is famous for its small wadeable flats that offer wonderful fishing for very decent sized tailing fish and for the beach fishing where the bonefish hang off the beaches and raid the baitfish. With the flexibility to operate either the traditional pinero boats or their Keys-type, flats skiffs, they can access water and therefore different species and types of fishing that the pinero cannot, stalking schools, pods, or singles.

Los Roques is practically unknown to American tourists, especially when compared with its well-marketed neighbors like Bonaire and Curacao to the west. It can be tough to get to. The flight back to Caracas from Los Roques is at 5:30 p.m. Anglers may request and use a charter flight on a Cessna 406 Turbo or on other planes owned by LTA if they wish. Los Roques is not particularly hospitable to independent travelers. Almost all visitors come as part of an organized tour or an all-inclusive stay at one of the posadas (inns) on Gran Roque. In the Los Roques Islands time has almost stopped, its natural beauty has maintained, wild and exotic, surrounded with a special magic that traps everyone including its authentic people and there way of living.

While there are dives available for all experience levels, Los Roques is particularly attractive to intermediate and advanced divers looking to experience challenging dives off the beaten track. Some of the posadas have their own motor boats and provide the service directly to their guests. This is a place for those who love to stalk fish on foot rather than being confined to a boat. While the archipelago is famous for its pancake flats the area also offers great opportunities on its coral banks, sandy beaches, massive flats and mangrove lagoons. Since then, Peter Hughes bought the boat and is running diving on it now -- but hasn’t changed the name of the boat. The best diving is off into the archipelago of islands anyway -- way too far to go to each day.

Expect to pay about $8 to $20 a person for boat trips. After a day of windsurfing and fun, the boat will bring you back to catch your 6pm flight back to Margarita. Without a doubt .this is a day you will never forget. Los Roques can be a day-trip from Isla Margarita or Caracas, or an overnight stay either on the main island, Gran Roque, or offshore on yacht or sailboat. This isolated archipelago has 340 islands and is surrounded by about 2 km (1.2 mi) of a collection of some 250 coral reefs. Often thought of as the “Christmas Island of the Caribbean” because of the predominance of wading and the good average-size fish, Los Roques is a world-class destination in its own right. This is varied and interesting fishing complemented by the prolific birdlife, good lodging, and an unforgettable tranquil island atmosphere. Los Roques is renowned for its variety of marine fauna. Just some of the many species include parrotfish, barracuda, red snapper, dolphin, shark, octopus, lobster and the near-extinct queen conch.
