The Sanibel Causeway, with a drawbridge and two spoil islands, was opened in 1963, making it much more convenient for residents and visitors to enjoy the quiet ambiance of these islands. With more convenient access came fears of over-development. Only one entry per e-mail address (you will automatically be entered into all four drawings). Anyone is eligible, with the exception of all MHI employees or family members. Some of the boats you can expect to see will be fishing boats, sport boats, sport cruisers, sport yachts and yachts. This is a great way to experience the excitement of owning a Sea Ray, meeting other boat owners and to join others in the wonderful lifestyle of boating. We can keep your car keys if you like-taking your keys on the boat can be risky since it’s not uncommon to lose them to the surf or sand.
If you are over 15 years of age and plan on fishing, you WILL need to purchase a fishing license before you arrive at our location. Island Bay/Shell Beach is a small coarse sand beach that offers a beautiful view of Island Bay and recreational boating activity. Parking is very limited.
A shrunken version of the queen conch, which once was fished in Florida for its meat. Conch harvesting is now illegal in the state. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service manages the 95-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System which encompasses 542 national wildlife refuges, thousands of small wetlands and other special management areas.
You are only steps to the sugar-sand beach. We are located on the historic east end near the lighthouse, restaurants and shopping. A sea wall halts the natural shoreward movement of sand, and the beach in front of the wall tends to erode away under the waves’ relentless pounding. This results in additional problems further down the shoreline. This protected sanctuary for thousands of nesting sea birds is located just north of Fort Desoto Park. On your way out to Shell Island, you will pass though an enchanting mangrove tunnel and get an inside perspective of a mangrove forest.
