Hawaii Nude Beaches

The Island’s scenic beauty, which includes waterfalls, sea cliffs, arid canyons and scores of beautiful white sand beaches, has served as the backdrop for many cinematic films. Helicopter tours are popular, as the spectacular sea cliffs of the Na Pali coast and the crater of Mount Waialeale (one of the wettest spots on earth), are not accessible by road. This second path has many turnoffs to the sand when you descend to beach level. From the north (Hanalei and Princeville) go south on highway until you see mile marker 20. From then on, you can probably see what you’ve come for - the beach or more.

Be sure to visit the baths by the lava arch about 1 1/4 miles from the Larsens Beach footpath. They are located 10 minutes from Little Beach in Makena and within walking distance of other beaches, dining and shopping in Kihei, Maui. As always, show respect in these areas as they are public and yet natural at the same time. The great weather of Hawaii makes all of this possible year-round, which is why the place is so popular. If you love lower humidity and sunshine with some breathtaking scenery, then Hawaii is the place to visit.

Some people on this fair island think that nude sunbathing has gone too far. Others don’t understand what the fuss is all about. In one case, we read a local publication say that Magistrate Judge Yamashita is out of touch with the facts in this case and contemporary thought in Hawaii regarding nude sunbathing at a beach traditionally know for such activity. First the change in the use pattern of the park is clearly significant when nude use is prohibited. On the right side (seaward) of the road, past the cinder cone (Pu’u Ola’i) is a paved parking lot (past the first dirt road turnoff to Oneuli Beach, Little Black Sand Beach). Nude surfing and just another day at the beach in Hawaii. Free the body, free the spirit, free your soul.

Donkey Beach was known as one of Kauai’s best nude beaches. Rocks litter the shore but a exquisite strand of sand and trees make the area very calm. It has two small offshore islands which make this beach more attractive. An established nude beach is one mentioned in a guide book and/or established by local use. We were there in May, so definetily not good for swimming or anything else. Pretty hairy surf. Not sure if it’s ever good. However the perfect seclusion provided the opportunity for a great many other activities for my wife and I. We definetily got some sun on our buns Good Times!!

At Makena, a shantytown was carved into the thick kiawe forest on the edge of Oneloa Beach, commonly called Big Beach, and at several neighboring beaches. In those days, nudity was the norm.

Off the beach, the strange newcomers clashed with the establishment and were accused of freeloading and stealing. Mayor Elmer Cravalho scolded both sides at a Kihei Community Association meeting in March 1970.

To those who didn’t like the newcomers, Cravalho said that his own grandfather might have been called a hippie and shipped back to Portugal if he had been judged on his appearance when he first came to Hawai’i.

To the hippies, he said hiding in the “boondocks at Makena” was cowardly and that they should get involved in the community.

By late 1969, the police were raiding the place on a regular basis, looking for runaways, draft-dodgers and nude sunbathers.

U.S. Marshal Howard Tagomori, a former Maui Police Department vice officer, remembers driving on the dirt road to Makena in the early 1970s with a handful of officers to make busts.

“We were friends with most of the guys,” recalled Tagomori, who later became Maui’s police chief. “It was like a game. We would talk story with them.”

The Makena colony grew to 300 to 400 people before it was largely evicted in 1972.

But nude sunbathing persisted at Makena’s more remote beach, Little Beach, which is tucked behind Pu’u Ola’i and separated from Big Beach by a 30-foot bluff.
