Sunbathers, joggers, those playing futevolei (volleyball sans hands) and futebol (soccer) and hawkers steadily filled the beaches and sidewalks along the promenade. Even though there’s a steady stream of locals selling wares, they’re polite in their approach and do take no for an answer. I decided long ago that since I won’t be playing volleyball professionally any time soon, I’m mostly playing for fun, fitness and skill improvement. The best way to improve is to play stronger competition!
Advocates of the sport claim that volleyball is simply too easy and the rallies nearly non-existent. Promoters of footvolley see a sport that is inexpensive, addicting to play, and exciting to watch, and that they say has the potential to become the most played beach sport in the world. Activities on Copacabana beach include volleyball, water sports and all night partying! Copacabana is also the home of futevolei: foot volleyball.
In the main beach you find special areas to play soccer, voleyball, futevolei(a variation of voleyball that is played with feet), do exercises . Plus that there are other areas where you can ride jetskis(you can rent one there). At any given daylight hour, you’ll find all of it happening on the beaches. Clean public restrooms at Copacabana beach - who would have thought it? Good thing, too, since the city is glued to its sandy shoreline.
Foot volleyball, or futevolei, is played on a beach volleyball court where you use your feet, not your hands, and points are scored exactly the same as in volleyball. You can also use your head, chest, legs, and creativity. You can see the famous Sugarloaf Mountain, the island-pocked Guanabara Bay and the beaches outlining the coast like links of white sausages. Even better, you can make fun of the inevitable sightseer aping the statue’s outstretched arms for a photo. Everything is better here: the beaches, the music, the chopp (“beer”), the entire lifestyle. Even when they were greeting me with a thumbs up, there was a faint patronizing pity in their smiles, as if to say, “How sad that you only get to visit paradise while we get to live here.” One of the most important words in their language is saudade, often used to describe the homesick longing Brazilians living abroad experience for their samba and their Antarctica lager, their futebol.
Most of the beaches of Brazil can be easily accessible by public transportation. And some of the beaches are extremely remote, isolated, pristine and unspoiled by the hands of man. Compared to foot-volley, beach soccer is a piece of cake. Even professional soccer players like Romario, Gaucho and Raimundo have fun with beach soccer. All in all, Copacabana is the crown jewel of the Brazilian beaches.
