The calm, clear waters at Hulopoe Bay make it an excellent place for snorkeling and scuba diving. The waters here are part of a protected Marine Life Sanctuary and underwater park and they are brimming with sea life. Hanauma Bay is one of the best and most popular snorkeling and swimming areas in the world. However, excessive swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving have threatened the bay’s marine residents. Snorkeling is great at the south end of the beach where the fish are varied and there is a coral reef. Because of the protection provided by unique coral formations, Hulopo’e beach is the safest and best swimming spot in Lanai and offers great snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming and body boarding opportunities.
The beach is also part of an extensive marine conservation preserve that stretches all the way from the shores of Maui to the south shore of Lanai The preserve is teeming with colorful tropical fish and humpback whales can be seen off shore in the winter months. We rented snorkel gear from “Snorkel Bob’s.” They also carried prescriptive goggles, allowing those myopically challenged to finally see while swimming. There wasn’t much coral in the reefs. Lanai also has some of the very best snorkeling and dive sites you will find in the Islands with a better chance of seeing the larger species of fish.
The beach is located in a protected Marine Life Conservation Area so there are numerous and colorful fish as well as unique coral formations found here. Encompassing approximately 600 acres the area is protected as part of the Kanepuu Preserve. This preserve represents the type dryland forest that once covered the dry lowland regions in the Hawaiian Islands.
Strong currents also characterize the waters of this area making swimming dangerous at times. Beware of the strong currents, which make the water unsafe for swimming. This strand is ideal for beachcombing (those little green-glass Japanese fishing-net floats often show up here) and fishing. Spinner dolphins can often be seen cavorting from shore, and will sometimes swim along side boats and people. Offshore, you’ll find good swimming, snorkelling, and diving. Onshore, there’s a full complement of beach facilities, from rest rooms to camping areas. The crystal clear waters make for great swimming, and the water is usually calm and safe except during a kona storm when heavy swells roll in from the south. Hulopoe is an idyllic place where native Hawaiians and visitors alike can kick back and enjoy this getaway beach.
Other trails or roads that branch off from the public features may be on private property, and are not managed for any public recreational use. Access is subject to adjacent landowner approval, and if used without authorization, you will be trespassing and possibly putting yourself at risk. You can choose from more than forty public and private courses, ranging from casual municipal links to elegant resort courses. They offer not only superb challenges, but also spectacular vistas.
