In the region of Abruzzi you may eat very well and you will have the possibility to taste the typical plates cooked respecting ancient prescriptions, using genuine ingredients of the local production. The dune area located in the territory of Villa Rose introduces typical botanic species of the sandy atmosphere, characteristic of the Adriatic coast, very known for relaxing holidays. Once on the Salaria, pedal to Pagliare and then turn right and enter the Abruzzo region. After a few kilometres on the flat, turn right and climb towards Controguerra and then, after about 3 kms, turn left towards Colonella. The town’s grandeur speaks of the importance of the once powerful Counts of Acquaviva who laid claim to this region.

Beginning in the 1970s, this trend began to reverse as Abruzzo’s population grew due to a net migration into the region. In 2001, Italy’s decennial census showed Abruzzo had 1,262,392 residents, a slight increase over the previous decade. Abruzzo also is popular for cross country skiing, especially on the high plain of Campo Imperatore in the Gran Sasso as well as the Piana Grande in the Majella. The region is divided into four provinces: L’Aquila (the largest), Teramo , Chieti (the most populous) and Pescara , Abruzzo’s main economic centre. The four provinces are further divided into 305 municipalities.

Shoreline of Martinsicuro

Dishabitated during the Middle Ages, only at the beginning of 1800 it began to be populated again. Between the two towns sits Rocca di Calascio, the ruin of an ancient fortress popular with film makers. Also within the Gran Sasso National Park is Castelli, an ancient pottery center whose artisans produced ceramics for most of the royal houses of Europe.

The historic National Park of Abruzzi is the ideal environment to admire regional fauna and flora: there reside some rare species as the Bear, the Chamois and the Wolf. Most of the year the beaches are sunny, and with 7,600 miles of shoreline bordering Italy and its islands, you can easily find waters where the temperatures are ideal for swimming. Miles upon miles of golden, sun drenched sand, in some places up to 1 km deep.
