Tybee Island Beaches Savannah, Georgia

Tybee Island is the place for “Fun in the sun” at a slow relaxing pace. Locals like to call it “Tybee Time” (during the off season). Tybee Island is a nice place along the Atlantic Coast because it has never been over-developed as you will find in other locales such as Hilton Head to the north. Or for that matter, the condo craze of Myrtle Beach, a bit farther north. Tybee Island is still a beautiful and quaint place to visit and Savannah is only minutes away. Savannah has lots of history and charm just waiting to be explored. This is one of those beautiful pieces of Americana that you really have to visit if only once. So we took our crew to investigate what the buzz was around this beach area off Savannah, Georgia.

There is a public fishing pier on the Back River, a ball field and a small park on the north end of the island. A two block walk to the river & 4 blocks to the north beach/lighthouse! Everything you want is a short walk away. And this is important for you because you don’t want to head back into Savannah. We found everything close enough and hotels were reasonable. You could even find some condos for rent here, too. With enough around -- a vacation is all but taken care of.

The Outdoor Inn is located on Tybee Island within easy walking or biking distance from restaurants, shops, attractions and quiet streets perfect for families. Of course The Outdoor Inn is perhaps best known for those who enjoy kayaking as we back right up to a marsh with access to the Back River and beyond. The Pier is located at the south end of the island and is very popular for fishing and strolling. Many beach festivals and events are held there throughout the year. There are kiosks located on the Back River from all three of our Tybee Island launch sites. The kiosks take both cash and credit cards. And if you don’t want to kayak -- a walk along the beach down to the pier, over to the lighthouse -- is just fine. It’s beautiful and since you have the Atlantic Ocean coming into Tybee Island, you have a nice gentle surf. The Savannah beaches are best at this point.

This barrier island boasts five miles of beaches backed by sea-oat covered sand dunes that are perfect for sunbathing, people-watching and frolicking in the sand and surf of the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can also choose from boat cruises, fishing trips, kayaking, bike riding and bird watching through the surrounding low country. While visiting Savannah it is only a 20 minute run out to Tybee and the beaches and we are within sight of Hilton Head Island. Whether you’re looking for a condo or a oceanfront beach house rental; space for two or twenty; beside the beach or near shops and restaurants, Sandy’s by the Shore might have a nice spot for you. Locals said it was a good choice.

Tybee Island on the Georgia coast is Savannah’s beach and is only a twenty minute drive from the Savannah historic district. Known for elegant weddings in Atlanta, the Stanley House is now offering simple but elegant and affordable beach weddings for two or for a small wedding party. Tybee (pronounced Tie-bee) is a moderately developed island community with lots of beach town charm. The Island has a functioning lighthouse with a museum.
