Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is the best place on the island to snorkel along with a myriad of tropical fish and other marine life. Along with major restoration to Hanauma Bay, which included a newly opened Marine Educational Center, other tactics have been put in place to further preserve the area for future enjoyment. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is open to the public from 6 a.m. Visitors are obligated to view a brief but highly educational film to instruct and help limit damage. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is one of the most popular natural attractions in the world. It is a natural crescent beach in the sunken caldera of extinct volcano.
But snorkeling can tire you out, so be sure to keep an eye on the kids. The current fees at Hanauma Bay are $1 per car to park, and $5 per person to enter. This sunken volcanic crater is a snorkeler’s paradise with clear, shallow waters, and is known for its abundant coral reefs and tropical marine life. Encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles, manta rays, and colorful tropical fish, such as the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, the Hawaii state fish. Barges, trucks, and bulldozers were brought in. The new swimming area (knee-to chest-deep at low tide) gave fish ample living space.
The City and County of Honolulu has gone through great lengths to reverse past years of abuse and neglect. At it’s peak, years ago, Hanauma Bay had up to 10,000 visitors a day. Yes, it is murky at times, especially if it isn’t sunny and the coral appears to be old, but I still think it is great fun! There are plenty of colorful fish and I think spending half a day here is great. If you don’t feel like walking or have a physical disability, there’s a small bus that takes people to the beach (it costs 50 cents on the way down and one dollar back up).
It was not just popular among residents but became a must see visitor destination when visiting the island of Oahu. During peak periods, the nature preserve saw as many as 10,000 visitors each day. If you plan to dive here, make sure that you bring proof of certification or you will be restricted to a sand patch inside the barrier in depths of less than 15 feet of water.
Hanauma Bay is also the romantic location of Elvis Presley’s beach boy days in the film Blue Hawaii. Hanauma Bay is a great place to snorkel Hawaii, try Hawaii scuba diving and take a beautiful scenic hawaii picture or an underwater hawaii photo. When you get to the beach, talk to the lifeguard to learn about conditions. No smoking is allowed, and the beach is closed on Tuesday.
