Just a long rant from one snowbird, saving our dollars in order to spend them in Florida every winter, and the thousands of others like us from not only Canada but all of the norther States as well. Doubt this will ever make print, as people like to think of us as the RICH who can afford to pay, and pay and pay. We found live sea urchins, conchs, sand dollars, and other species that I’m unsure of what they were. It was so wonderful not only to find some wonderful empty shells to take home, but to see all the sea life outside of an aquarium. Driving is permitted on the hard sand in some areas. Swimming, surfing, sunning and fishing are popular at this beach.
This bay is a large, long, continuous strand of sand divided by names into several beaches. Swimming in the crystal clear water is possible all year, but is especially good in summer when the seas are calm. It’s very expansive, and has excellent soft, white sand. There’s plenty of picnicking, boating, and swimming. It’s interesting that sea oats grow mostly on the sand dunes and crests of dunes where salt spray can reach. It is not so common inland or in protected swales between dune peaks, where the salt spray can’t reach.
Shop, hike, bike or simply relax in the sun and feel the warm, soft sand between your toes. Visit Cumberland Island National Seashore for a natural experience: sun and sand, beautiful vistas and relaxing atmosphere.
Rated America’s Best Beach in 2005, Fort DeSoto has much to offer the beachcomber: 7 miles of waterfront, sugar white sand, several snackbars and a 12 foot wide 4 mile long asphalt recreational trail for walking, biking and skating. Another highlight is Fort DeSoto, a historic fort complete with cannons and mortars. As the waters rose the surge pushed and pulled the beach, smoothing down dunes, pulling the beach sands out into the gulf or pushing them inland to fill tidal areas. The beaches now slope more gradually, allowing the waterline to move further inland during high tides. We offer 35 miles of white-sand beaches on some 20 barrier islands. We’re within minutes of many popular Florida attractions.
The entire outer perimeter of the island is lined with beautiful, white sandy beaches. Several picnic areas with modern facilities are located around the island with ample parking.
