During the summer international championships of beach soccer, volleyball and other sports are promoted in arenas along Copacabana Beach. Some beach kiosks are open around the clock, offering refreshments and snacks. Activities on Copacabana beach include volleyball, water sports and all night partying! Copacabana is also the home of futevolei: foot volleyball. There is a higher concentration of hotels here than in any other neighborhood in town, and for good reason -white sand, smooth, inviting waters, and an array of charming kiosks and cafes in the area all await.
In the shifty beach breaks of Santa Catarina, the final portion of some world champion’s efforts are realized. Andy Irons sewed up all but one of his three world titles in Brazil, and Kelly Slater made his triumphant comeback in 2005 by clinching in much-celebrated style on the Brazil coast. The area around Lagoa has some of the best seafood restaurants that I have ever seen. Surf is also a good option, as the state of Santa Catarina is one of the most famous surf spots in Brazil. To the right, Copacabana Beach is one of my personal favorites. Where else does the sea meet the mountains with such grandeur? I saw a sunrise on this beach in 1977 and I’ll never forget it. It was absolutely mind blowing. And that same sun does this every single day. The waves stop at the brilliant white sand and magic is made once again. Make sure you do Sugar Loaf Mountain while here and the Christ Statue. Both just as wonderful as the beaches.
Natal is known by its endless beaches, Genipabu is the most famous, 30 km to the north of the city. Golden sand dunes, palm trees and riding buggys make this beach an exciting place to visit. Because Natal is located near the most eastern part of South America the time difference with London and Lisbon is only 3 hours. The time difference with central Europe is only 4 hours. There are numerous Natal hotels in to choose from. Renowned for its African-influenced cuisine, music and architecture, Salvador is known as “the Capital of Joy,” because of its exuberant week-long Carnaval celebrations, Brazil’s largest. Divided into two distinct sections by an escarpment, the city offers beaches ideal for swimming and diving. The south end of the beach has a clutch of barracas (seaside huts) serving food and drink, just next to the lighthouse that marks the southernmost tip of the Salvadoran peninsula. Stand in front of it, and you will get a practically 360-degree view of the water!
Recife is a major port city, and much of its energy and culture has its source in the constant influx and outflow of trade. Often called the Venice of Brazil for its many canals, bridges, and tiny one-way streets, Recife is a wonderful city in which to wander about, letting chance provide a memorable discovery or two. But in the 1980s, the local government began a series of restorations and today Old Recife is a colorful and pristine flash of colonial Brazil. There you can see architecture from the early days of the colonization, such as the complex of buildings along Rua Bom Jesus. The port of Recife is one of the most important of Brazil, on account of its proximity to Europe and its convenience for vessels passing around the east shoulder of the continent. It is the landing-place for two transatlantic and one coastwise cable lines.
This waterfront area is Recife’s real center, possessing both the city’s finest beach and a wealth of fine restaurants. Much of Recife’s nightlife is here, as well as in Gracas. Situated directly on the beach in an area called Piedade. It is seventeen kilometres from the historical centre of the town. This beach contains natural pools with blue water, such pools are placed in between the sand and the reeves. This is a family beach, ideal for bathing.
I know this sounds strange, given that Fortaleza is also on the water, but this is different. It’s remote and quiet, with miles of wide beaches interrupted only by tiny fishing villages and small groups of jangadas - the small sailing rafts used for lobster fishing by the local fishermen. Nowadays, Fortaleza is used as a jumping-off point for many serene palm-lined beaches that the northeast is known for. The lively Praia da Iracema and Praia do Meireles are excellent choices for going out; the beaches in Fortaleza are known more for their nightlife than for soaking up sun and surf. Fortaleza is warm throughout the year, with an average annual temperature of 27C (80F). Ocean breezes prevent conditions from getting too suffocating in summer.
With 365 days of sun bathing its waters, Canoa Quebrada offers several options for the leisure tourist . Canoa Quebrada is 165 kilometres southeast of Fortaleza, a city of some 2 million plus. From there, it’s about a two hour drive along the coast to this Brazilian tropical paradise. Fortaleza is also the jumping-off point for one of Ceara’s better-known and most fashionable beaches, Canoa Quebrada, half an hour from Aracati, which is two hours from Fortaleza. Canoa Quebrada is popular with foreigners and young Brazilians alike, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s really lively at night, particularly Saturday nights in “high season”.
