Along the coast there are beautiful little port towns with incredible seafood, served raw, or simply boiled and dressed with oil and lemon. Among my faves are Villa Vignola in the summer tourist town of Vasto and L’Angolo da Filippo in San Vito Chietino where an incredible array of hot and cool antipasti di mare are the way to go. Today’s 141km stage from Frosolone to San Vito Chietino saw the race come down from the mountains heading for flatter terrain along the Adriatic coast of Italy. Although the parcours looks predominantly downhill on paper, riders still had a few difficult climbs to contend with and a crosswind coming in from the sea. The Abruzzo National Park is about an hour?s drive along an excellent wide dual carriageway. Lovers of history and architectural beauty will enjoy Lanciano, the ancient Roman city of Anxanum, regarded as one of the most interesting sites in Abruzzo and located just 10 km from San Vito Chietino.
Near the brewery is a quaint barrio of charming small houses originally built for workers of the brewery. Nearby is also a very nice park, with a restaurant that features all things Quilmes (mostly the beer, not just the town). The apartment retains many of it’s original features including exposed stonework and vaulted ceiling. It has stunning views overlooking the marina and the Adriatic sea.
San Vito Chietino is just 52km from the central mountains, and Abruzzo has an established and growing ski scene. Pescara airport (Ryanair to London Stansted) is just 47km away, and Miglianico golf club is 28km. San Vito Chietino is set on a hill facing the Adriatic sea that boasts crystalline and turquoise waters. The coast is famous for its wide sandy and gravely beaches, its promontories and desert inlets.
Trabocchi, are giants wooden platforms, built since 1400, in the middle of the sea. They can be seen from the town of Ortona to Fossacesia. The villa is situated on the coastline where you find the protected Trabocchi - wooden fishing huts built on stilts. There is a lovely seafood restaurant a few minutes walk from the house and a mile away from San Vito marina. The coastal area is known as ‘Trabocchi’, (a reference in dialect to the local fish and seafood). This reputation is in evidence at the Hotel Garden’s restaurant.
