There used to be a nearby structure, called “The Elephant Hotel”, but it no longer exists. However, Lucy was rented out to an English family for one summer season in 1902 as a kind of giant beach cabin. Vacationers, welcome to Margate City, a town known for its landmark elephant is also a fine sandy beach vacation on the Jersey Shore. Hoping to draw customers to the then-deserted dunes of “South Atlantic City”, Lafferty happened on the novel concept of building this behemoth -- a building shaped like an elephant. You can go and tour the inside for $4.00 -- and that price goes at least partially to help finance the continuing survival of this loveable oddity.
Top-class lifeguards are on duty throughout the year and environmental education programmes are run during the holiday seasons. One can hire beach umbrellas and shaded areas are available on the beach. Classic rides from the defunct Southport amusement park have already been shipped in as well as parts of the now-demolished water chute at Rhyl.
Thanet District Council have now moved the building from the harbour wall, to a plot of land adjacent to the harbour because of the spiralling costs for a sea born building. Construction work on the project has a projected completion of December 2010. Easy access to the beach and the pools are just steps away from the building. There’s plenty of parking in the covered garage.
If you take the N2 South from Durban and follow the new toll road all the was into Margate. You will come down a short hill, keep to the left. For beaches, just a short drive out of Margate towards Broadstairs will take you to some of the best beaches on the south coast, with soft golden sand that few other places can rival. Facscinating chalk coastal features too, including a complete chalk arch stepping out from the cliff between Kinsgate and Joss Bay. Nothing impedes the views; even the most claustrophobic can feel comfortable here.
