Bondi Beach is one of Australia’s greatest hang outs. People from all over the globe gather, relax and have fun there. Bondi Beach is also great for taking relaxing walks, whether it’s during the day or in the evening. This includes a cafe, changing rooms and chairs and sunshades that you can rent. In the lead up to the Olympics, Bondi Beach is in the spotlight. Australia’s most famous beach has been given the dubious pleasure of hosting the beach volleyball competition at the forthcoming games. Bondi Beach is a wide 1 km long strip of golden sand arched around Bondi Bay and pinched between Ben Buckler to the north and Mackenzies Point to the south.
At the southern end of the beach is a public seawater ‘rock pool’, home to the famous Bondi Icebergs Club who derive their name from swimming even during the colder winter months. Surfside Bondi Beach is only purpose built backpacker’s hostel in Bondi Beach, built just for backpackers & travellers. Bondi beach is actually a lot smaller than you might imagine (although its sands truly are golden or at least they were while the Olympic visitors were in town). Surfers are there in their numbers, it’s true -- we spent some time sat on those sands watching some of them make it look like the easiest thing to do, whilst others belly-boarded their way inland under the watchful eyes of instructors. Bondi Beach is approximately one kilometre long. The width of Bondi Beach averages 50m at the north end, widening out to 100m at the south end.
Bondi Beach is also significant in the course of Australia’s cultural history as the site of the foundation of the first formally documented surf lifesaving club in 1907. While Bondi Beach is a beautiful getaway, many people prefer a quiet environment, with little to no people. It is home to a number of surfing clubs and there are two life-surfing clubs on Bondi Beach. If you have always wanted to learn how to surf, then what better place to do it and Let’s go Surfing Bondi Surf School will teach you how easy it is to “hang ten.” They also have a complete surf store where you can get all your gear. Surfboards abounded, and there was even a surfing lesson going on. I was more interested in watching the lifeguards than the lesson, but it still looked like fun out of the corner of my eye.
A crescent of golden sand lapped by an ocean that is the perfect shade of blue. It’s egalitarian, too. The lifeguards play a crucial role in protecting thousands of people, a TV show is based on the beach, it is called “Bondi Rescue”. It is based on the lifeguards of Bondi and them doing what they do best, protect the lives of the beach goers.
