Levera Beach - Grenada

A beautiful leatherback turtle returns to the sea right here from Levera Beach in Grenada. So peaceful is this beach that this critter goes about the normal business of life at the Grenadian National Park. It's little wonder that this beach is dear to the hearts of environmentalists everywhere. A perfect spot with perfect conditions. And when you come you'll see Mother Nature at work.

Levera Beach - Grenada
The best of Grenada's 45 beaches are on the southwestern part of the island - with the exception of Levera Beach. It's part of the Levera National Park, and is at the northeastern tip of the island.

Red Beach at Levera Beach - GrenadaBut be prepared. We visited some of the calmest beaches in the Caribbean on Grenada, yet this isn't one of them. Because Levera Beach fronts the Atlantic ocean, we found there was some pretty rough surf at times.

Because of this, the shoreline tends to drop more swiftly. But then, it's more dramatic here and makes for some of nature's best shows. In fact, we found one beach that was a dark red color, probably from the pigments in the cliff right above it.

Levera Beach - GrenadaLike Bathway, Levera Beach is popular with the locals who come here in great numbers during their holidays and the weekends. Don't plan on spending a weekend here. It's packed. But during the week - stroll along the beach - be brave and jump in, or just take in the beauty of Levera. The rocky road leading to Levera will leave many to venture the easier reached beaches.

Morne Fendue Plantation House, GrenadaJust offshore here is pretty little Sugar Loaf Island. Covered with green it adds to the spectacular scenery. Nearby you'll find a mangrove swamp with white mangroves. Grenada recently added Levera Beach to the national park system because it's an important waterfowl habitat and sea turtle nesting area.

Levera Beach - Beach Index:
  • Sand - medium grain but a dark clay mix. Water can be turbulent.
  • Facilities - none, but a restaurant named Morne Fendue is couple of miles from here. It's an old (1912) plantation house chiseled out of river rocks. You need to call ahead and they only accept cash. This is ancestral home of the late Betty Mascoll.
  • Shade - many tropical almond trees and adult palms.
  • Sports - some swimming when surf is calm.
  • Notes - a must see.

It's called Pink Gin - don't laugh - want to venture how this next beach got its name? Next! >>

Pink Gin Beach - Grenada

Even though you may not flip on beaches you visit, you'll certainly agree Pink Gin Beach is worth flipping for. We found these fellows flipping at the beach while others were enjoying a great afternoon strolling in the sun. Pick Pink for that leisurely walk while the sun sets. Make sure you take the camera - the view is well worth the visit.

Pink Gin Beach - Grenada, Spice Island
Near the airport at Point Salinas, and between two large resorts - the LaSource and the Rex Grenadian, lies Pink Gin Beach. It's white sand, and clean - so clear that the water shimmers out past the rocks.

Kids at Pink Gin Beach - GrenadaAnd no one can remember how Pink Gin Beach got its name. There isn't really any gin on the island that is pink. Nonetheless, Pink Gin is a great find. What makes it the perfect family beach is that the shore slopes slowly into the sea. And with the rocks that come out on the left side, we saw almost no waves. Nice for little kids!

Since the waves are almost non-existent, we found Pink Gin a real good place to snorkel. Especially out around that rock cropping. On the other side you'll see a great variety of marine life, and the visibility is around 100 feet. The bottom slopes steeper past the rocks - almost all sand with an occasional head of coral.

Pink Gin Beach - GrenadaClose by Pink Gin Beach is the Aquarium Beach Club and Restaurant. We found that if you ordered a drink, you could not feel shy about asking to use their facilities. Great food here, too. Plus on the side is a place that rents kayaks. Now think of the fun you can have kayaking in the warm Caribbean in Pink Gin Bay?

Wow - how can words describe the view? It's another great Caribbean gem - and this time in Grenada.

Pink Gin Beach - Beach Index:
  • Sand - medium grain, white, coral based, clean.
  • Facilities - restaurant on the beach.
  • Shade - none.
  • Sports - kayaking, snorkeling, swimming.
  • Notes - great family beach! Recommended.

La Sagesse Beach - Grenada

If you were to be marooned on an isle, La Sagesse Beach in Grenada would be the place to be. It has the typical coconut palms, complete with coconuts - a sheltered harbor so you can launch your raft, and we found plenty of fruit trees close by. Nowadays, it would be heaven to be lost at La Sagesse Beach - with all the modern conveniences here.

La Sagesse Beach - Grenada
A sleepy island with friendly people. What more could you want for a vacation get-a-way? Grenada has a lush interior that includes Grant Etang National Park, and wonderful beaches like La Sagesse and others we review here.

La Sagesse Beach - Grenada, Spice Island, CaribbeanGrenada is criss- crossed by nature trails and one of them leads here to this beautiful cove called La Sagesse Beach. Part of the La Sagesse nature center, it's made up of rocky outcroppings surrounding the far edges - these you can even walk on and explore. Just be careful of any wet area as it may be slippery. Make sure to tuck a camera in your back pocket!

La Sagesse Beach - Grenada - Plush greenery!Le Sagesse is like Grenada - different than the turbulent times of the '80's. Now there are small snack shops nearby that will allow you to stay longer. Before, you had to pack a lunch. And who comes to Le Sagesse? Snorkelers, fishers, and hey, those who like doing nothing more that lolly-gagging around in the sun!

Sunset at La Sagesse Beach - GrenadaA true Spice Island, Grenada is almost an instant garden! The locals will say - drop a few seeds anywhere and you'll have a garden. And just a few steps from Le Sagesse beach, you will find a jungle of palms, oleander, bougainvillea, purple and red hibiscus, crimson anthurium, bananas... and much more.

La Sagesse - Beach Index:
  • Sand - fine, off-white, some debris.
  • Facilities - a small restaurant opens onto the beach.
  • Shade - adult palm and other trees.
  • Sports - bring your own gear (snorkel, diving).
  • Notes - Nice hideaway, few people on weekdays.

Let's jump over to one of my favorites on this island, Bathway Beach - Next! >>

Bathway Beach

Some claim Bathway Beach in Grenada a dangerous beach. But seriously, you must observe the conditions of the sea. As this video shows, the surf can be heavy on the outside of the rock outcropping that protects the inside of Bathway Beach. When tide is flowing out, you must watch for rip currents between the rock and the shore. Use caution, but have a great time at Bathway.

Bathway Beach, GrenadaWhen you decide to travel to the beautiful Caribbean island of Grenada, you have more to do than choose your hotel. You have to choose between 45 awesome beaches, some with even that interesting black sand!

Now all the beaches on the island are public, so no matter where you are - if you're on the beach, you're on public property.

One tip before we start: there are no legal clothing optional beaches in Grenada.

Bathway Beach

Pronounced "bat way", this beautiful beach is located in Bathway (who would have thought?), in the northeastern part of Grenada. Bathway Beach is popular on the weekends with the locals from this town, a favorite because of the natural shelter from the ocean. Even so, because of its location on the open Atlantic coastline, during the US winter season, waves can get pretty choppy.

But don't be surprised if you're the only one there on a weekday.

Windswept and framed in jungle green palm trees, Bathway Beach on Grenada is worth the effort to see. Make sure you take time to watch nature and listen to the surf as you sit back and take in Sugar Loaf and Levera Island. These strands of sand are the nesting place for sea turtles. You'll only catch them at night or see the hatchings at daybreak.

And here's a great tip while you're in the area. Don't miss Levera National Park. It is awesome with it's 23 acre pond surrounded by picturesque white and red mangroves. This is the largest mangrove garden on the island! Take your camera, as the scarlet ibis makes its home right in the mangrove. You'll have a good chance seeing them early in the morning, or late afternoon as they come home to roost.

BEACH INDEX
  • Sand - dark, volcanic/coral mix, medium grained, fine tree debris
  • Facilities - full service close by
  • Shade - plenty with adult trees and palms along the road
  • Sports - bring your own gear
  • Notes - avoid on weekends, very crowded with locals

Morne Rouge Beach

Morne Rouge Beach in Grenada is a must see. We happened upon Morne Rouge while investigating Grand Anse Beach. We were told that Morne Rouge was well worth a visit. Boy, were they right. The water here is so clear - you'll be able to see bottom when you're up to your neck. That's cool.

Morne Rouge Beach GrenadaLocated south of the best beach on Grenada, but not to be overlooked, Morne Rouge Beach is smaller. Since the cove is not as open as Grand Anse Beach, the water is calmer. This beautiful Caribbean spectacle is also more secluded (read romantic).

Morne Rouge Beach GrenadaWith only one hotel on the beach, you’ll find Morne Rouge Beach great for getting that book read while taking in the rays, or just relaxing in the Grenadian sunshine.

Because of the smaller than usual cove, Morne Rouge Beach bay is somewhat shallower than other beaches. As a result, the water here is always slightly warmer.

Taking the kids? This is the ideal beach for families because of the fact that it is shallower, warmer, and mostly calm. As a matter of fact, so calm on many days you can see right to the bottom with crystal clear waters.

Morne Rouge Beach GrenadaBut what about that romantic quip? Morne Rouge Beach is big enough for families and couples, but small enough to make all the other factors happen as well (warm, calm water).

Take in the ocean and the beautiful Grenadian hillsides as you enjoy your time on the island. This is one stop you will remember for years to come.

Morne Rouge Beach Satellite PhotoBEACH INDEX:
  • Sand – fine, white powder, clean
  • Facilities – hotel with restaurant on beach
  • Shade – adult trees, palm trees
  • Sport – bring your own gear
  • Notes - recommended

Grand Anse Beach - The Best Beach

Our selection of Best Beach in Grenada is based on ease of location, condition of the beach and surrounding area, and facilities. Grand Anse Beach has it all. Pure gold sand, as if you could take it away when the sun shines down. When you come to Grenada, make your way here at least one day.

Grand Anse Beach GrenadaStretching for miles, two, in fact, Grand Anse Beach is the spectacular golden beach you see when looking through a brochure or website on Grenada. Grand Anse Beach has everything - from shops (if someone in your party gets tired of laying or playing in the sun) to eateries.

Grand Anse Beach GrenadaYou can spend some time just soaking in the Grenadian way of life by starting at one end and walking slowly to the other end. Before you begin, remind yourself that you are here to relax and that you are going to take it all in: the birds chirping, the sound of the tires on the paved street near by (well, scratch that if you'd like), the gentle Caribbean wind whispering through the palm fronds above you, the din of the local radio playing through the shops and restaurants along the beach, the smell of the ocean, the glimmer of the sun as it touches your skin, the sound of children playing... and on and on. Are you there, yet?

Grand Anse Beach is it, with dive shops complete with snorkel gear, windsurf rental (though there is not much wind on this side of the island) and water sports. And, you can arrive by water taxi. How chic!

Grand Anse Beach GrenadaBut the facilities don't make the beach - the view does. And Grand Anse Beach won't let you down. Pristine sand with gentle lapping waves makes for unbelievable clear water. Hugged by the surrounding mountains and coconut palms, and a view to the sea that is breathtaking means you won't want to pass up at least a full day at what many call the Caribbeans' number one beach.

Grand Anse Beach GrenadaBEACH INDEX:
  • Sand - golden, clean
  • Facilities - full service
  • Shade - trees
  • Sports - full service rentals
  • Notes - highly recommended, arrive early
