Like almost all neighborhoods in the Southern part of Rio, Copacabana is considered safe and pedestrian-friendly. It is perfectly suitable for walking tours, as it is basically flat and distances are relatively small. Leblon is on the far end of the beach in one of Rio’s most desirable districts, which is becoming increasingly upper class as rents continue to rise. This beach is quieter and offers some of the city’s finer restaurants. It is as if the mountains in the interior force human spillage out onto the sand to relieve the pressure from such a densely packed urban environment. So by noon on almost any day of the week in the Southern Hemisphere summer (December-March), there is little room to sit.

Ipanema is one of the most expensive places to live in Rio. At the forefront of beach culture are the many surfers and sun worshippers who socialize daily at the beach. Locals like to call it “Pepinoline,” and it’s known as one of Rio’s hollowest waves. When it gets too big it will close out, so it’s generally best around head high, and when the Ipanema area is flat it can be worth a look, as the rebounding peaks may offer something fun. Rio, as it is popularly known, has one of the world’s most beautiful natural harbors. It is surrounded by low mountain ranges whose spurs extend almost to the waterside, thus dividing the city.

What is so cool about Leblon Beach in Rio is that it’s line by one of my favorite neighborhoods. Sure, you can walk to the bakery early in the morning and get that Italian or French bread. And make that cafe com leite – coffee and hot milk – along with the hot bread with real butter. Does it get an better? But what makes Leblon better than and different than the other Rio de Janeiro neighborhoods? I think it’s the people. They feel this is their little piece of paradise stuck between the rising mountains and the powerful Atlantic Ocean. Decades ago, everyone knew each other. But today it’s a good mix of families, many who grew up right here – even though Rio spans some 25 miles of coastline. And who wouldn’t want to live right next door to the girl from Ipanema? Get the subway from the center and head out here. It’s worth a visit. And stop by a bakery. Sit down. And have that coffee and bread. And take in Leblon.

I am looking for a 2 bedroom condo that sleeps four to rent for a week in November or December 2010 on the beach in Leblon, Rio De Jainero. I don’t know the exact dates at this time as I want to confirm a condo before I make my flight reservations. Please let me know if you have any rentals. Thank you, Terri.
