Hope Town

Abacos Beaches - Nice!

by Dave Jackson

While Marsh Harbour is the center of the buzzing “Hub of the Abacos” in the Bahamas, Green Turtle Cay is the center of a much more secluded and slower paced yachting destination in the Northern Abacos. Flying into the airport at Marsh Harbour or the smaller one at Treasure Cay, you and your guests may take a water taxi across the Sea of Abaco to Green Turtle Cay. Elbow Cay , 6 miles (10km) east of Marsh Harbour, is a scrub-and-pine-covered islet favored by lizards and feral cats, with a solitary hamlet called Hope Town. It’s a quaint place that appears pinned to the ground by a 120ft (37m) candy-striped lighthouse. Romora Bay is located on the sunny, protected bay side of Harbour Island , where each sunset is a unique experience of beauty in the Caribbean. In fact, many say the sunset at Romora Bay is the most beautiful sunset anywhere, With the beautiful turquoise water in the foreground and the island of Eleuthera in the distance, it may literally take your breath away!

The outlying cays, nestled around Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay are made up of picture perfect villages, with quaint, white clapboard houses, trimmed in jewel tones. The town is overlooked by a 120 foot candy-striped lighthouse, perhaps the most-photographed sight in Abaco. A short walk takes you into Marsh Harbour for shopping, or to hit the restaurants and bars strewn along the water. Marsh Harbour is full of great places to kick back as well. The Abaco Beach Resort is at the top of the list and right in downtown Marsh Harbour there are at least six restaurants and bars within walking distance of the boat.

There are more than 700 beautiful islands and cays stretching over 600 miles and circled with 900 square miles of coral reefs. The seas are teeming with life and you can experience some of the best fishing and diving in the Atlantic. Mail and most imported shipments arrive in Nassau and are then dispersed throughout the islands. In addition to fantastic diving, Nassau has casinos, shows, shopping and endless activities. You can reach Paradise Island from downtown Nassau by walking over the bridge, taking a taxi, or boarding a ferryboat at Prince George Dock. Cabbage Beach does not have public facilities, but you can patronize one of the handful of bars and restaurants nearby and use their restrooms Technically, you should be a customer, even if that means buying only a drink, even a Coca-Cola.

On Great Abaco, you may rent a car at Sea Star to explore the treasures offered by this lovely island, including its quaint towns, and marvelous blue holes! Treasure Cay offers lovely beaches for snorkeling and diving, as well as tennis and a first class golf course. Like other islands in the Bahamas, the Abacos were settled by Loyalists who tried to farm as they had in America, but soon turned to the sea to sustain themselves. Today, the Bahamas is one of the most popular Caribbean destinations among Americans because of its proximity to Florida – with Bimini Island being only 40 miles from Miami and the capital of Nassau only 185 miles away. Visitors come to enjoy the miles of golden beaches and to leisure amid the clearest turquoise crystalline waters found anywhere.

June 3, 2006

The Abacos are further north than the other Bahamian Islands, and Marsh Harbour is home base for most tourist operations among the islands. There are so many beaches it is hard to come up with a best of list. Most beaches are similar in that they are white sand and slope very gradually out to [...]
