Abacos Surfing

by Dave Jackson

If the surf isn’t up, just settle down at this new Guana Cay marina. Orchid Bay features: beachfront and bayside homes/lots for sale, full service marina (with laundry and showers), accommodates up to 7 1/2ft. The same swells that slam the coasts of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic also break along the outer reef passes of San Salvador, Rum Cay and Mayaguana - often with the same size and intensity. You can actually enjoy being anchored out in total seclusion from others, enjoying waves that wrap flawlessly around colorful coral reefs breaking into crystal clear blue warm waters - unlike surfing the harsh frigid cold season in the northeast United States.

Please refer to the Island Rentals page for booking information. And to make the most of your successful fishing trip, the Abaco Inn offers our Fisherman? Beach umbrella and chair rental service on the beach. Select your rental from beachfront cottages and houses where the world outside of your door will beckon you to walk for miles, sugar yourself with sand, build a sand castle, collect shells or catch a wild wave. Or if you prefer, select a cottage conveniently located in the settlement and spot a curly-tailed lizard (harmless), dolphin or Abaco Parrot !

Small-boat rentals range from a 5m (17-ft.) Boston Whaler to 7m (23-ft.) Man-O-War boats, or even 6.5m (22-ft.) Aquasports. Don’t forget to pull up to “Crackers P’s” for a snack and a drink. Featuring lush green forests, secluded inlets, and small hills that are a hikers dream, guests of Green Turtle Cay vacation rentals simply cannot get enough of this outdoor wonderland. The beaches here are always a sight to behold with their clear blue waters, stark white sand, and relative quiet that seems strange for such magnificent beauty. Rent a boat from Blue Wave Rentals or one of several rental companies in Marsh Harbour and spend your leisure days island hopping. Hire a fishing guide or try your luck at Bonefishing on the flats.

The Barrier reef extending the length of the outer islands of Abaco provides a complete coral reef with its inhabitants. The more than 200 foot visibility allows clear views and wonderful photographs with minimal distortions in vivid colors. Surf’s up, and coral reefs spread their sea fans like sirens waving to young snorkelers. And while it tends to be quiet in town most nights, Cap’n Jack’s rocks with music and dancing Wednesdays and Fridays, while Harbour’s Edge lures a crowd for pizzas and music on Saturday night, with dancing under the stars and the lighthouse beam. Bonefish are plentiful on the flats, tuna, wahoo, dolphin, sails and marlin a short distance out, and there’s terrific reef fishing. Try your hand at lobster in season, too!

There are excellent restaurants, grocery stores, liquor stores, a museum, and interesting gift shops. You stored water beneath it and salt in boxes, and the kitchen was a separate building outside so the house wouldn’t burn down in case of fire. The settlements that sprung up on the various Cays have most of the essential services, such as a liquor store, supermarket, marina, etc., however these services tend to be spread out around the settlement. There seems to be no well-defined centre of town.
