Nearby Islands

Did someone mess up the name here? Isn’t “bazaar” spelled with two “a’s”? Nonetheless, users have been bugging us to get our beach towel in gear to review this very long strip of brown sand in Bangladesh. They are proud of this baby, and rightly so. It is a relief from the poverty that plagues the country. Here, miles of golden sands, towering cliffs, surfing waves, rare conch shells, colorful pagodas, Buddhist temples and tribes, delightful seafood--this is Cox’s Bazar, the tourist capital of Bangladesh. The warm shark free waters are good for bathing and swimming & while the sandy beaches offer opportunities for sun-bathing. In the coastal hills lies the old temple of Adinath, dedicated to Shiva, which becomes a place of pilgrimage during the month of Falgun (March). The western and northern coasts of the island form a low-lying tract that is fringed by mangrove forests.

If you find yourself craving more, there is the island of Maheskhali just of the coast of Cox’s Bazar. It has an amazing mangrove jungle and is home to the shrine of Adinath and a Buddhist Pagoda. Through the centre of the island and along the eastern coast line rises a range of low hills, 300 feet high; but the coast to the west and north is a lowlying treat, fringed by mangrove jungle. In the hills on the coast is built the shrine of Adinath, dedicated to siva.

Its western coast is sandy and is rich in different kinds of shells. At the northern part of the island, there are beds of window pane oysters.

A visit to the nearby islands of Sonadia, Moheshkhali and the coral island St. Martin is also rewarding. The place is called INANI.U can also visit MOHESHKHALI ISLAND occupied by tribal nations called RAKHAIN and you can watch them knitting and weaving clothes with natural color and hand made loom. From the top of the hill you can have glance at the Bay of Bengal. Off the northern part of the island, there are beds of window pane oysters. During winter, fisherman set up temporary camps on the island and dry their catches of sea fish.

Though the season is in winter but Cox’s Bazar sea beach is crowded almost through out the year. Especially in winter season, it is hard to get an accommodation in the hotels if booking is not made earlier. But how to develop a sustainable system so that we can keep the beach clean, manage the trash and make our environment a little better? Can anybody suggest anything?

Cox’s Bazar is famed for its calm and quiet, shark-free beach with the green trees and pretty hills on one side and the blue waves on the other. One, perhaps, does not come by many such seaside resorts around the globe. The beauty of the setting sun behind the waves of the sea is really breathtaking. The wild waves of blue water! We should vote more in favor of Cox’s Bazar!

Cox’s Bazaar is also known for its wide sandy beach which is claimed to be the world’s longest natural sandy sea beach. It is an unbroken 125 km sandy sea beach with a gentle slop. Near the border with Myanmar this town is noted for one of the world’s longest and least-crowded beaches an incredible 121 km in length! The setting for this beach with its silvery gold sand is tropical-forested hills.

The total distance from Dhaka to the island is 510km (316mi). About a third of Sundarban Forest area is covered by a complex network of tidal creeks, mudflats and small islands, and the entire forest is subject to tidal inundation. The forest consists of about 200 islands, separated by about 400 interconnected tidal rivers, creeks and canals. The area is known for its wide range of fauna, including 260 bird species, the Bengal tiger and other threatened species such as the estuarine crocodile and the Indian python.

But let me tell you the diving and snorkeling off the coast here is spectacular. Because of the offshore reef, the shoreline in [...]
