Skimming

I have been to Makena on day where 12 foot waves were breaking in 3 feet of water. When this happens, the lip explodes, throwing water spray 15 feet into the air. About 3 feet over the people standing near the break. Pretty awesome, but dangerous, too. Still, Makena Beach is a wonder to sit and take in on any given afternoon in Maui. It’s easy to find and generally not too full. Times have changed a tad, and I’d definitely suggest locking the car and keeping it near others. Find a good spot on Makena Beach and enjoy! It will take you the better part of an hour to walk the whole beach, and maybe that’s not a bad thing to do. The action is exciting almost anywhere. Makena Beach is a skimming favorite. And Boogie boarding! Try them both!

It also has one of the best body surfing breaks on this side of the island. The shore slopes gently into the deeper water, and the absence of a dramatic break make it ideal for children and families. Enjoy breakfast next to the sparkling, brand new pool with waterfall spa. This is the perfect location for ocean sports enthusiasts with world class diving, snorkeling and kayaking. Several locals we talked to said the beach is known for breaking arms, necks and shoulders. This is a great place for adults, not sure I would bring kids here. While most people lock their cars, some leave them unlocked in the hope that thieves will not break a window to check out the empty car. Normally the regulars try and break this sort of thing up, but anarchy is the norm on this beach. This sort of thing can really put a damper on the day.

Makena Beach, which is also known as Big Beach is one of the best beaches on Maui. With thick soft sand, swaying palm trees everywhere and crystal blue waters, this is definitely a sight to see. Scroll down this page for an overview of Maui’s favorite beaches. The Makena Surf complex is the premier complex on Maui, and it is a gated community. The ‘B’ building is the only building in the complex on the sand beach.

Our local and knowledgeable associates can help you find everything from the best nearby dining to your very first surfing lesson. There are good waves for surfing or body boarding, but look out for rocks. Also, the beach is generally broken up into two sides, the side nearest the trail from Big Beach is where straight people sun bathe, and the far side is generally where people who are gay (mostly males) hang out -- literally! High surf and strong currents may be present. Rock hazards are present.

It is often referred to as THE beach on Maui. Often crowded on weekends, there is a second section of the beach connected by a path on the right. This shoreline is very gently sloping and is a visual feast -- with thick soft sand, palm trees and the beautiful Maui Prince Hotel rising out of the background. This is the beach that everyone pictures in their head when they think ” Maui.”.The waters are calm here, making a real swimming beach that is ideal for a day out with the whole family.
