To the northwest, about 10 kms away, lies the Nalasopara village, the erstwhile Konkan capital from about 1500 BC to 1300 AD. Nalasopara is believed to have been the birthplace of the Buddha in a previous incarnation. And from Gosaba it is a lovely cycle rickshaw ride through charming Bengali villages and then another boat ride to Sajnekhali. That there is a village by this name and it is blessed with a heavenly seashore with a clear view for miles across the blue waters was not known to many. But thanks to the new, shorter road being built to connect Ratnagiri and Ganpatipule, Arevare has found a place for itself on the tourism map of Konkan.

Mumbai citizens rush to these three beautiful and serene getaways to stay off mundane schedules. Marve is a quaint little fishing village, the nearest and the quietest of the three. It is famous for a temple on the seashore as well as the beach and the natural beauties here. If one wants to enjoy travelling by sea, the launches are also available between the two towns.

The river Savitri enters the sea from the town of Harihareshwar. Towards the north is the temple of Harihareshwar, said to have been blessed by Lord Vishnu Hence Harihareshwar is often referred to as Devghar or house of God. The town of Harihareshwar is known for its tranquil and serene beach. If you are adventurous enough to take a small boat to the nort side of the bay, you can see where peshwas or prime ministers of Maratha kingdom originally resided Also see the ‘Peshwa’ Smarak & visit the Bankot fort at bagmandala, about 4 kms away.

Other beaches such as Kovalam, Marina and Juhu, are also venues for recreation and entertainment for everyone. This is not how we ought to be treating our history. Today, the beaches of Orissa with their soft white sands fringed by surging sea water that constantly changes colors and a sky with breathtaking sunsets continue to lay claim to being among the best in the world.

Mandwa village too, has a charm of its own — with its beautiful groves of coconut palms. Marve is a quaint little fishing village, the nearest and the quietest of the three. Gorai and Manori, a little further away popular for all night beach parties and moonlit rendezvous.
