Islands Of The Cyclades

More Great Grecian Beaches

by Dave Jackson

Corfu, the emerald island is part of Ionian islands the seven islands that extend in parallel line along the coast of mainland Greece. Shades of blue and green are the colours of Corfu. The trains only operate on the mainland. Olympic Airways offer domestic flights to many cities and island, although this is quite an expensive way to travel. Greece is home to thousands of miles of stunning beaches, both on the coastline of the mainland and on its thousands of islands. The beaches range from soft white sand to volcanic pebbles to rocky cliffs.

Further reading and an internet search identified the area as Myrtos Beach on the northwest side of Kephalonia which is one of several Ionian Islands west of Mainland Greece. Windmills and tiny churches glistening in the glorious bright sunshine characterise this beautiful group of islands which lie south east of the mainland. Some offer you holidays to Mykonos and holidays to Santorini, two of the most popular islands of the Cyclades. Mainland flights out of Athens and Thessaloniki and a number of charter flights from various European cities offer regular service to Crete Greece, primarily in the summer. Once you arrive in Crete, you’ll find Crete hotels and vacation rentals to fit every budget, as well as all types of restaurants offering their local variations on Greek food.

Sunny weather is forecast in all parts of the country, with scattered cloud on the central and northern mainland from early evening. Winds north-northwesterly, light to moderate, turning strong at sea in the south. Midway between Athens and Thessaloniki, the Pelion peninsula is like a sliver of some other, lusher country latched onto the eastern side of the Greek mainland. Its backbone is a mountainous ridge of forested peaks speckled with the silvery scales of slate roofs; on either side translucent coves have been carved out of the cliffs. Skiathos is one of the Sporades group of islands, lying just off the east coast of mainland Greece . A compact island, it’s 12km long and about 4km wide.

While Elia has become increasingly gay, it remains less of a scene than Super Paradise, and is never too crowded. There are three restaurants and tavernas at the beach. Small or long, well hidden or not, isolated or crowded, Small Cyclades beaches are made in order to satisfy every taste and capture your heart forever. The island is big enough to satisfy every visitor’s needs, from exciting and lively nightlife and crowded beaches to calm vacations and sightseeing excursions. Its history goes back for 3.000 years.

It is a paradise on earth, without hotels, bars taverns and big crowds. At this beach the tourists have to respect nature and live in harmony with the sea turtle. In other words, Crete beaches cater to all preferences and styles, including quiet family beaches, beaches packed with the younger crowd, secluded beaches for couples and gay beaches in the island. Water sports facilities are offered at many beaches, some of which are ideal for scuba diving in Crete. To get to the red sand beach, we are forced to climb through a rocky passage, and it is quite crowded (probably because it is the only red sand beach on the island). We leave after a while and head to Perissa, with lovely black sand, which is fairly empty and quiet.
