Ocean Side

Dewey Beach, Delaware

by Dave Jackson

During the winter, this beautiful mile-long stretch of sand sleeps as it gains energy for the upcoming summer “season.” Residents know that come Easter, the Dewey Beach community goes through an extreme change. The DBC is a popular locale for locals, and by locals we mean retirees and cute co-eds. Resort eateries and restaurants offer a wide array of specialties from the catch of the day to French cuisine. Area shopping ranges from factory outlets to unique and artistic specialty shops.

Dewey Beach is the place to close out the summer labor day weekend. The bars and clubs are jam packed with young, attractive professionals looking to make some summer memories. Dewey Beach is growing fast and getting better every year. The Jolly Trolley will take you to the boardwalk and downtown Rehoboth Beach or to Rusty Rudder Restaurant in Dewey Beach for fun, music, dancing on a deck, and good food. For those who like walking, there is a nice easy walk on the beach to Rehoboth or Dewey.

Although there are several good skimming sites on this states coastline, Dewey Beach is by far the best. This is the only area on the east coast that truly is beach break. Dewey beach is also a very popular spot amongst the tourists on account of its sandy beaches and the various different hotels, condominiums and cottages that are found on it. The beach is considered as a magnet of sorts for the party goers. It is a unique place to visit. A barrier island with the ocean on one side and the bay on the other.

Despite its small size and low year-round population of approximately 300, it’s not uncommon for thousands to descend upon the town during the summer weekends. However, as is the case with most beach areas, Dewey Beach quiets down in the fall and winter. Many vacationers seek this beach because it is the home of the highest sand dune between Cape Hatteras and Cape Cod. This “great dune” rises over 80 feet above the shoreline.

Take an inside look as Dewey Beach’s dedicated lifeguards, rescue units and police officers gear up during the hectic July 4th weekend, when thousands of vacationers descend upon the beach looking for a good time. Thrilling and action-packed, it’s ocean-side excitement at its very best. This beach is the home of the highest sand dune between Cape Hatteras and Cape Cod. This “great dune” rises over 80 feet above the shoreline. There is a great variety of lodging choices here to suit families, and the wide beach expanses allow for plenty of sand castles and languid strolls. No matter where you should stay in Dewey Beach, you are always just a few minutes from the beach, and the Rehoboth Bay is just as easy to reach.

Bright tropical fish swim through the clear blue water, so snorkelers will find plenty to observe.
