Samana Dominican Republic

We are talking about a paradise island, with wonderful tropical weather all year round, breath taking landscape and very friendly people. The Dominican Republic is indeed a wonderful holiday destination, especially when you want to escape the cold and rainy season in European countries. The world population of humpbacks has reached approximately 40,000 or about 30-35% of its original levels. Its tourist industry has not yet exploited the full potential of its location: the tropical forests, coconut groves, hundreds of cozy alcove beaches with turquoise crystal clear waters, waterfalls, protected national parks, a protected bay, a peninsula.

Be one of the few who get to experience this world-renowned spectacle, where thousands of humpback whales gather to frolic in the turquoise waters during mating season (mid January to mid March). Free boat transportation takes guests to the island for a catered lunch. Three distinct types of suites offer air conditioning, terrace or balcony, fireplace, kitchen, refrigerator, safe and satellite TV. There are a number of real estate opportunities available, whether you’re looking to purchase a personal vacation property, an investment property, a commercial property, or wish to develop a property for personal or commercial purposes. Property in the Dominican Republic is very moderately priced when compared to similar type properties elsewhere.

Beautiful scenary along the way with typical Dominican villages, poor and very dirty. This is our seventh time in the DR. Should you find the strength to leave your luxury beachfront resort, we recommend that you venture inland and discover the Dominican’s rich colonial history. Enjoy the oldest cities in the New World adorned with quaint cobblestone streets and colourful stone homes and businesses. All colors are available and with enforced glass or double glassed. A prove product for the Caribbean and in all different kind of styles.

Samana is heavily populated by Americanos, descendents of freed American slaves. Because of this the town holds a series of annual harvest festivals, a tradition dating back to the Yam and Rice festivals of West Africa. The El Portillo-Las Terrenas area also offers attractive dives to a mixture of shallow and deeper coral reefs and caverns, as well as coral gardens for snorkeling.

Samana has a distinct European flavor area. You can get around on foot, by moto-concho (motorcycle taxi) or taxi, but the best way to see Samana is to rent a small 4×4 jeep. Or for something more upbeat, the north coast haunts of colourful Sosua , exclusive Playa Dorada and beautiful Bahia Maimon will be ideal. Mom-and-pop businesses and budget accommodations thrive on the peninsula, whereas in other parts of the country they are being drowned out by commercialism and big business. Samana tours for this treat begin around January 15 of each year and last until the middle of March. Various Samana whale watching tours leave at various times during the day. Plan a relaxing stay at Hotel Alisei (aerial view) with 48 different sized self catering apartments, including 1 honeymoon suite, and 6 penthouses without kitchen. Beautiful, relaxing and incredibly entertaining are just a few of the delightful qualities that make Las Terrenas an ideal vacation destination.

Located on the north coast of the Samana peninsula, Las Terrenas beach stretches one mile on either side of the town. Speckled with coconut palms, it’s the perfect destination in which to enjoy a mix of sand, surf and shade. Descendants of the original settlers called Americanos still live around the town, which is on the south coast of the Samana Peninsula. Some residents speak English as their first language.

Las Terrenas

Over time, sediment filled the channel, joining it to the mainland to form a peninsula. Although it was one of Columbus’ stops in 1493, it was not ‘officially’ founded by Spain until the arrival of people from the Canary Islands in 1756. With a world-class beach, Playa Rincon, as the crowning jewel of all the Caribbean’s beaches, the adjoining bays play host to some 9 beaches, with each one being a picture-perfect, postcard-like setting for a carefree, tropical vacation. The main beach of Las Galeras is at the very end of the North Coast Highway, the village’s principal street.

In addition, as Dominicans are often quick to point out, their land was the setting for Christopher Columbus’s first colony, La Isabela, and Spain’s first New World city, Santo Domingo, at the end of the fifteenth century. Though the island quickly lost this foothold, the events that took place during its brief heyday did much to define the Americas as we know them. Take a look at some photos of the most beautiful places in Santo Domingo. From the Colonial Zone, to the most chic and glamourous restaurants. Minister Perez also announced that the new highway from Santo Domingo to Samana is steady going on and will be finished in 2008.

Playa Rincon, Samana - Dominican Republic

Playa Rincon Samana

Las Galeras, the once small fishing village has awakened. It was once untouched, with a natural beauty found only in the most remote spots. But, because it is close to the city of Samana, wealthy Dominicans made it their weekend paradise.

Since that time, Las Galeras has been set on the map mainly by abundance of beaches and the landscape that is majestic and simple, all at the same time. Las Galeras Beach is here, as well as the more famous Playa Rincon. And people are awakening to see that this is prime ocean front property with beautiful year-round weather in a country with a stable government, and far away from it all. What more could you ask for? Oh, and the problem with mosquitoes? Ask me what they’re doing to combat them. Pretty high tech!

Rincon is a quiet beach, usually deserted, on a small bay - but with no hotels in site. And, no vendors, booths, signs, radios - all the paraphernalia that comes with a popular beach. Nearby, a fresh-water lagoon to rinse off in. Sweet.

You don’t need a boat to get to Playa Rincon, Dominican Republic. You can get a taxi out of Las Terrenas or Samana to Las Galeras. Just before Las Galeras you’ll see the turn-off to Playa Rincon. The road is pretty rugged from here, so plan accordingly (timewise). If you do have the time, plan a stop at one of the local eateries and experience what food in this neck of the woods is like. You won’t find more hospitable people than Dominicans. They know what they have and they are proud of it. This is pretty close to paradise. Just look.

Playa Rincon SamanaSo plan to eat at Playa Rincon as the fish and langosta are reportedly the best in the Dominican Republic. And, if time permits, take a tour down to beautiful Playa Bonita. It’s romantic and peaceful.

But any place along the shore is simply breathtaking and well worth your visit. See if you can book online for a week or month and spend time here getting to know the whole concept of living in the Caribbean.

Maybe Columbus didn’t have it so bad?

Las Terrenas is busy; Las Galeras somewhat less, and Playa Rincon is sleepy. Enjoy.

Playa Rincon - Beach Index:

  • Sand - medium grain.
  • Facilities - few, some food huts.
  • Shade - palms, trees.
  • Sports - none.
  • Notes - pretty deserted - enjoy!

When I visited this area earlier this year, I was so impressed, I’ve decided to invest in real estate here. A nice home right on the beach would suit me fine. OK, doesn’t have to be year-round or when the hurricanes are moving in, but it would be paradise to get away from the rat race. And did I mention the cost of living here is cheap?

A very special thanks to Tony van der Heijden of Immomexx for these pictures. Please visit his site http://www.dr2007.com/ for information about Real Estate in this super hot area of the Dominican Republic.

Cayo Levantado, Samana - Dominican Republic

Cayo Levantado, Samana - Dominican Republic Cayo Levantado is a small island in Samana Bay. Legend claims that bounty hunters came here long ago. Pirates of the Caribbean? Well, if they didn’t find treasure, they did find paradise. And, due to the fact that this island is pristine, many other modern-day treasure seekers have Cayo Levantado on their radar. Construction is booming here. Hopefully the island will retain some of its ancient charm. Time will tell. Cayo Levantado, Samana - Dominican RepublicThe sand here is white and powdery; the turquoise waters crystal clear - perfect for swimming and snorkeling. And, there is plenty to eat here. A few huts and facilities will have you trying all the local cuisine. Sun, beach, food, sand… paradise indeed. Cayo Levantado is also called Bacardi Island because some of the palm trees look like the ones in the Bacardi ads. Remember that because of the popularity of paradise (Cayo Levantado), several hundred tourists venture here daily. And, cruise ships often use the island for a visit. Cayo Levantado - Beach Index:

  • Sand - white/coral based.
  • Facilities - full service.
  • Shade - umbrellas, huts and palms abound.
  • Sports - full service.
  • Notes - can get quite crowded at times. Plan on having company.

And now, on the southeast side of the island where the new hotel is going up there’s an intimate beach curving around to a point, a few yards beyond which is a rocky islet. Between them, an outlet leads to a lagoon that has to be some kind of paradise. The natural untended lawn is almost like a golf course. A boatman will take you for a few pesos and pick you up later. Ask at Cayo, and… Enjoy!
