As compared to other French Riviera beaches, beaches at St Tropez have soft sand and are well looked after. French Riviera beaches are the main attraction in this summer resort area in the south of France. With more than 300 sunny days a year and plenty of sandy beaches, the French Riviera has been a popular vacation destination for centuries. While the western part of the Cote de Azur is dominated, with the exception of the strange Esterel mountains, by soft hills wrapping around the small Riviera towns, leaving Nice we now find the high Alps diving into the Mediteranean.
Passing the port of Nice we enter a first of many tunnels to be surprised by Villefranche, former fishing village with small beach and nice boats in its sheltered bay. Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes departement are sheltered by the Alps , and are the most protected part of the Mediterranean coast. The winds are usually gentle, from the sea to the land, though sometimes the Mistral blows strongly from the north-west, or, turned by the mountains, from the east. The French Mediterranean is one of the world’s most visited charter destinations, for many well-deserved reasons. The climate is sublime, the landscape stunning, and the stops offer everything from tranquil islands to “flash” destinations such as St Tropez , Monaco and Cannes.
The colorful spirit of the Mediterranean fills the air. Provence is nature at its purest. Post lunch, we rented a pedal boat and set off on an hour-long ride over the Mediterranean before walking around the dramatically rocky Cap. The town is small but pretty with wide promenade bordered with plum and olive trees along the beach and red tiled French -Italian Mediterranean style mansions. The most visited place here is of course the film auditorium, just yards from the main beach.
Five days is considerably more ideal, allowing time to factor in some side trips to glamorous nearby resorts like Monte Carlo or Cannes. You could also spend some time exploring the lavish villas and ancient Roman ruins in Nice’s swanky Cimiez quarter, and indulging in quintessential Riviera opulence with dinner (or just a drink) at the renowned Hotel Negresco followed by a date with Lady Luck at the Le Ruhl Casino. Most of the ancient activity, especially for protection, was on the Lerin Islands just off the coast, and the history of Cannes is really the history of the islands. Cannes is full of yachts, shopping, a few objects of cultural significance. Cannes is also famous for the yearly film festival in May.
Since the beach in southern France is rocky and has black sand, there is no surfing and the waves are not high. It is nice that they are having somewhat of a privacy here though but I prefer the 50th state scenery. Your visit to France will never be complete if you have never been to the French Riviera. Whether summer or winter, this place is still perfect for many travelers. The first great asset is 25 km of coast - among France’s longest - with a series of beaches and five harbours, enable one to exult in all the joys of the sea. The nights are an invitation to prolong the daytime fun.
Camping in the French Riviera with Eurocamp means a coastline of legendary beauty, with warm blue seas, superb sandy beaches and vibrant resorts give the south of France a special magnetism. Contrasting with smooth, white beaches and idyllic islands, the dramatically beautiful hills in the hinterland provide wonderful surroundings for walks and drives. Keep in mind when wanting to go to a beach in France, you’re going to have to travel south to the French Riviera. There’s upscale beaches, private beaches, public beaches, family beaches, secluded beaches, and most definitely nudist beaches.
