Normally visitors throng Salalah during the Khareef season when it rains, which was just a month away. Heerst hier de moesson (of Khareef) met koel, nat en mistig weer. Wat veel Arabieren naar hier doet vluchten. One Omani we spoke with said that at other times of the year there would be fishermen out, but during the khareef it is too dangerous. Since we arrived in Salalah before the start of the Khareef season we could only see the spots which would become waterfalls in the days ahead. The caves in such spots are pretty cool and serve as nice picnic spots. This period (late June to early September) is known as the khareef season.
Visitors from across the Persian Gulf flock to Salalah to enjoy the monsoons and avoid the harsh heat faced by the rest of the region during the same period. Surf can be significantly larger than in Salalah during the Khareef. Beach break, also reef and point breaks.
We found a chicken shawarma restaurant in the New Salala area and had dinner. The waiter had recommended an apartment nearby. Its restaurant serves the best and delicious international dishes. The hotel is also providing rent-a-car for attractive prices for its residents. Restaurangerna, varav majoriteten indiska eller libanesiska, Er en handfull till antalet och tycks vara en arabisk variant po jonkarnas drive-in-re-stauranger. Alla ligger vid nogon stor vag eller val tilltagen parkeringsplats.
After lunch at one of the local restaurants we’ll head off for West Salalah, visiting the Biblical “Nabi Ayoub” Prophet Job’s Tomb, perched high up in the “Jebels” (mountains). En route are spectacular views of the plains, mountain landscape and emerald green pastureland. The on-site restaurants offers a variety of delicious English cuisine as well as Indian, Chinese, Continental and Arabic specialities. You can sink a cold beer in Muscat’s business-class hotels, but you could pay L4 for it and alcohol is available in few hotels outside the capital and very few restaurants anywhere. The exchange rate works out at roughly L2 to one rial and Oman doesn’t feel cheap.

So end of August or the first week of September should be the best time to visit Salalah. Guests should dress conservatively for their visit to Oman. Please do not wear shorts or sleeveless shirts.
Salalah, its second largest city, is an anomaly in Arabia as it benefits from the climatic effects of the yearly monsoon. The city is an oasis where tropical fruits grow abundantly. An interesting write up on salalah. I know that there is 2 bus companies running in oman that go from buraimi to salalah, its a 12 hour bus ride with stops for salah ( prayer) and lunch/dinner. To the west of Salalah are many stretches of beautiful beaches and Mughsail is one of the most popular of these because of the “Blow Holes” in the rocky shelf close to the shore. If you are lucky you will be able witness the sprays of water gushing out of these natural holes in the rock face, these holes display dramatic bursts of water and foam sometimes reaching 15 meters in the air.
