Grand Baie Beach Mauritius

If you had a paint brush, pallet and enough time, you probably couldn’t paint a picture more pristine than the beaches of Mauritius. And often we get ask what are our favorite beaches in this area of the globe - undoubtedly there are many world class beaches from Zanzibar on out to the islands of Mauritius.

And the people who arrived here first - maybe they imagined the rest of the ocean held such treasures? It makes it hard to think about work when you see those lazy palms and that brilliant white sand. Can we simply lay out in the sun for a bit?

With Mont Choisy close by, Grand Baie is a small peninsula on the northeast coast of the island. Just like the once sleepy town of Buzios, near Rio in Brazil, Grand Baie was a fisherman’s village not too long ago. And they were the ones that enjoyed the beautiful beaches you’ll find here. I love contrasts, and Mauritius doesn’t let you down. You have the brilliant white sand of the beaches and the just gorgeous emerald waters of the ocean. Drop in a few lovely coconut trees and this just might be paradise. But it wasn’t always that way, here. Grand Baie was almost left without hope of development. The wise people of the Mauritian government changed all that and now Grand Baie is the jewel of the island.

Just about everything is here. Boutique shops and sales of local crafts make this an ideal place to come learn about Mauritian culture. But that’s not all. Development has included many hotels and resorts which range from elite to bungalows with kitchenettes. They’ve included a marina complete with water sports, and with the Black River Gorges National Park near by, you will have plenty to do if all you do is spend your vacation on this part of Mauritius.

Grand Baie still has fishing boats so when you visit the beach here, remember that you’ll be sharing it with them. Other beaches we’ve reviewed, Pereybere, Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches do not have all the fishing boats. But the beach and water is simply breathtaking here. Shade is close by with the tall Casuarina trees which line almost the entire coastline. This beach will probably have fewer people in it because of the fishing boat situation. If that doesn’t bother you, you’re in for a wonderful day at the beach.

Sunset Boulevard comes into Grand Baie Beach and here you will find a few apartments and local eateries where you can hang out. It’s a real photo opportunity as the palms sway in the breeze and you can normally catch a small fishing boat in the view. Down toward the opposite end of the beach is a real fish market and at the right time of day you’ll see fishermen bringing in their catch.

Plage Grand Baie, MauritiusGrand Baie Beach is spectacular and has everything close to make coming here and enjoyable experience. The sand is soft, the water warm with light waves. The beach slopes gently so even small children can enjoy the water near shore. And if you get adventurous, you can walk quite a ways towards other nearby beaches. Take a camera and some water and you’re good for an experience you’ll never forget.

Final thought: It was here that in November of 1810 the British invaded Mauritius, called the Invasion of Ile de France.

Tamarin Bay Beach - Mauritius

Huge surf comes right through a break in the surrounding coral reef and finds its way to the Bay of Tamarin on Mauritius’ southwest shore. Because of the topography of the island at this point, the breakers can be sweet. But don’t count your surfers, just yet.

They are few and far between, mainly because Tamarin Bay, or Baie du Tamarin, is shallow salt flats. Yes, the beach is very nice, and there are some nice facilities nearby. But Tamarin Bay has sort of a rough around the edges feel for Mauritius.

Nonetheless, Tamarin Bay Beach is worth a visit. Beyond the palm and casuarina trees lies some grand landscape. Close by you’ll find the forest and mountains - well, part of the volcano that was here eons ago. It’s worth the time to check it out by trekking to the trees and taking in nature at its best.

You’ll see Montage du Rempart across the river. Tamarin Bay is special, and worth a visit - especially if you want to boogie board or surf.

We’re off to see a deep lagoon with crystal clear water - so special they called it “Belle”, or “beautiful” - up NEXT! >>

Mont Choisy Beach - Mauritius

Mont Choisy Beach Mauritius

Back along the northern coast of island nation Mauritius is Mont Choisy Beach. It’s located on the northwest tip, just north of Trou aux Biches and is the longest beach in Mauritius. The resort area here is also named Mont Choisy.

Mont Choisy Beach MauritiusWhat makes this special is the gentle way the strand of white sand bends around the coast creating a bay of beautiful, turquoise water, lined with casuarina trees. These trees provide shade and a perfect backdrop for the ocean. A word about the casuarina tree: it’s nice and shady, but has a thorny pine-cone-like seed pod that can be found under the branches. They don’t feel good when you step on them.

Since this beach is very accessible, it’s a favorite among both tourists and locals. And, little wonder. There’s the beach and also a nice soccer field close by. Relax, people watch, enjoy, repeat.

Mont Choisy Beach MauritiusThe entrance to Mont Choisy Beach is guarded by a monument which commemorates the very first manned flight between Mauritius and Reunion Island. The competition took place on September 10, 1933 in the early days of aviation, between a Frenchman named Sutel and a Mauritian named Jean Hily. The record books do not show who won, however, Hily lost his life when attempting the second round, held October 4, 1934.

Mont Choisy - BEACH INDEX:

  • Sand - white, coral based. Medium to fine grain. Some debris.
  • Facilities - near by.
  • Shade - mature trees.
  • Sports - snorkeling, swimming.
  • Notes - gets crowded on the weekends.

Club Med Beach, Eleuthera - Bahamas

When you fly over this area it is clear to see that the Bahamas is blessed with a lot of what we love; beautiful, long white sand beaches and crystal clear water that is contrasted by a lush green that sets it off as a gem in the midst of the Atlantic Gulf stream. And no wonder pirates loved these islands. Build a bonfire and keep the bugs away, count your loot. In the morning pick a coconut or two. Come to Club Med Beach on Eleuthera and imagine yourself a pirate. We did!

Club Med once had a resort here. Now it’s on Columbus Isle, close by. Why did they first choose this area? A look around the beaches and surrounding land will reveal that this choice property is perfect - shade, beach, breeze - everything… except Mother Nature. You just can’t predict everything.

What Club Med Beach is very well known in this area of Central Eleuthera, is for Club Med being destroyed by hurricane Floyd in 1999. The beach, though suffering at first from the harsh weather, looks as pristine as though it was never even touched.

The beach is in a perfect location as it is 5 minutes away from Governor’s Harbor and settled quietly on the Atlantic side. Atlantic side beaches are usually well known for being rougher water beaches or wavy to say the least, but Club Med Beach is actually calm and there aren’t many waves. Casuarina trees are abundant in this area and provide a fair amount of shade for any visitor to this perfectly long and wide beach. You’ll really get a kick out of those trees on the hotter days of the year, trust me.

The water is very clear and stays shallow for quite some time so feel free to wade out and have the time of your life with waves gently lapping against you. For beach walking, consider walking in the evenings or even the mornings and be sure to make plans for the heat in the hours in between. Once the sun comes out to play, you’re going to want to swim. This is perfect because the water is warm and there are plenty of good snorkeling spots at the south and the north ends of the beach. For this you are going to want to go on a calmer day because although this beach is fairly calm, it is still an Atlantic side beach and on certain days it will be rougher than usual.

Club Med beach is a popular beach because of its shallow waters, pink sand, and over beauty. Don’t expect to be alone here, but the length and width of the beach more than make up for passing by the occasional visitor. There are also a few higher end houses on the shoreline, but there is no longer a Club Med, as it was torn down in 2004. Rebuilding of some of the old buildings and a transformation into a project entitled “French Leave” is in progress, but the beach remains open.

Club Med Beach - BEACH INDEX:

  • Sand - Pink sands, very sandy.
  • Facilities - Some private housing and new buildings, French Leave.
  • Shade - Casuarina trees along the shoreline.
  • Sports - Walking, swimming, snorkeling on the North/South ends. Light bodysurfing.
  • Notes - A great location and perfect conditions make this the best beach on Eleuthera.

Hey, let’s hop over to Abaco Island for the grand beaches there! >>
