Grand Baie Beach Mauritius

If you had a paint brush, pallet and enough time, you probably couldn’t paint a picture more pristine than the beaches of Mauritius. And often we get ask what are our favorite beaches in this area of the globe - undoubtedly there are many world class beaches from Zanzibar on out to the islands of Mauritius.

And the people who arrived here first - maybe they imagined the rest of the ocean held such treasures? It makes it hard to think about work when you see those lazy palms and that brilliant white sand. Can we simply lay out in the sun for a bit?

With Mont Choisy close by, Grand Baie is a small peninsula on the northeast coast of the island. Just like the once sleepy town of Buzios, near Rio in Brazil, Grand Baie was a fisherman’s village not too long ago. And they were the ones that enjoyed the beautiful beaches you’ll find here. I love contrasts, and Mauritius doesn’t let you down. You have the brilliant white sand of the beaches and the just gorgeous emerald waters of the ocean. Drop in a few lovely coconut trees and this just might be paradise. But it wasn’t always that way, here. Grand Baie was almost left without hope of development. The wise people of the Mauritian government changed all that and now Grand Baie is the jewel of the island.

Just about everything is here. Boutique shops and sales of local crafts make this an ideal place to come learn about Mauritian culture. But that’s not all. Development has included many hotels and resorts which range from elite to bungalows with kitchenettes. They’ve included a marina complete with water sports, and with the Black River Gorges National Park near by, you will have plenty to do if all you do is spend your vacation on this part of Mauritius.

Grand Baie still has fishing boats so when you visit the beach here, remember that you’ll be sharing it with them. Other beaches we’ve reviewed, Pereybere, Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches do not have all the fishing boats. But the beach and water is simply breathtaking here. Shade is close by with the tall Casuarina trees which line almost the entire coastline. This beach will probably have fewer people in it because of the fishing boat situation. If that doesn’t bother you, you’re in for a wonderful day at the beach.

Sunset Boulevard comes into Grand Baie Beach and here you will find a few apartments and local eateries where you can hang out. It’s a real photo opportunity as the palms sway in the breeze and you can normally catch a small fishing boat in the view. Down toward the opposite end of the beach is a real fish market and at the right time of day you’ll see fishermen bringing in their catch.

Plage Grand Baie, MauritiusGrand Baie Beach is spectacular and has everything close to make coming here and enjoyable experience. The sand is soft, the water warm with light waves. The beach slopes gently so even small children can enjoy the water near shore. And if you get adventurous, you can walk quite a ways towards other nearby beaches. Take a camera and some water and you’re good for an experience you’ll never forget.

Final thought: It was here that in November of 1810 the British invaded Mauritius, called the Invasion of Ile de France.

Trou aux Biches Beach Mauritius

Trou aux Biches is by far the most sought after beach resort in Mauritius. It owes its popularity with discerning regular visitors mainly owing to its safe bathing for children, perfect conditions for snorkelling (either in its lagoon or along its reefs), and its fine silver sand. The resort resembles a typical Mauritian village with traditional charm and a gentle way of life.

Wouldn’t it be cool just to move here and spend your days frolicking around the white sandy beaches? But what would grandma say? Mauritius is far and away from any metropolitan areas - chances are you are a world away from her and her good cooking. Still, some break away and choose the life of an islander.

With its open spaces, tropical architecture, romantic thatched bungalows and palm-shaded tropical gardens, Trou aux Biches has become a landmark of Mauritian tourism.

Having spent several weeks reviewing hotels/resorts around Mauritius, we chose Le Sakoa. We certainly weren’t disappointed.

As a romantic at heart, you will find you are lured back here time and time again. Experience Trou aux Biches for your wedding and honeymoon and return with your family and friends.

Beach at Trou aux Biches

Mont Choisy villas and bungalows are close enough to the tourists hub of Grand Bay to be accessible on foot, by car or public transport but far enough to enjoy peace of mind and privacy sought by most visitors.

If you get a chance to jog here, imagine the beauty you’ll encounter right on the beach. The sand is hard packed the closer you get to the water and you’ll find it is course and a great medium to run on.

Mont Choisy Beach - Mauritius

Mont Choisy Beach Mauritius

Back along the northern coast of island nation Mauritius is Mont Choisy Beach. It’s located on the northwest tip, just north of Trou aux Biches and is the longest beach in Mauritius. The resort area here is also named Mont Choisy.

Mont Choisy Beach MauritiusWhat makes this special is the gentle way the strand of white sand bends around the coast creating a bay of beautiful, turquoise water, lined with casuarina trees. These trees provide shade and a perfect backdrop for the ocean. A word about the casuarina tree: it’s nice and shady, but has a thorny pine-cone-like seed pod that can be found under the branches. They don’t feel good when you step on them.

Since this beach is very accessible, it’s a favorite among both tourists and locals. And, little wonder. There’s the beach and also a nice soccer field close by. Relax, people watch, enjoy, repeat.

Mont Choisy Beach MauritiusThe entrance to Mont Choisy Beach is guarded by a monument which commemorates the very first manned flight between Mauritius and Reunion Island. The competition took place on September 10, 1933 in the early days of aviation, between a Frenchman named Sutel and a Mauritian named Jean Hily. The record books do not show who won, however, Hily lost his life when attempting the second round, held October 4, 1934.

Trou-aux-Biches Beach - Mauritius

We visited Mont Choisy and made our way up the coast to Trou-aux-Biches Beach. Trou-aux-Biches is very accessible and fronts the Trou-aux-Biches Village Hotel. It came to be one of our favorites mainly because it is identical in beauty to the others, and there are a variety of things to do here.

For instance, you can bring the little ones and just hang out at the beach - you rest while junior runs back and forth to the water, building a sand castle. After that, you can tour the amazing Mauritius Aquarium close by. The Mauritius Aquarium is host to hundreds of examples of the local sea life. Make sure you see the fish feeding everyday at 11 AM.

The Mauritius Aquarium is just down the road in Pointe-aux-Piments.

Also near Trou-aux-Biches Beach is an Hindu Temple. It’s just across the coastal road and worth a visit to see this culture.

When the day winds to a close, you can have a nice meal at the Trou-aux-Biches Village Hotel, or, if you have sand sticking to you everywhere, and need to make it back to your hotel - take the coastal road south and enjoy a spectacular Mauritian sunset. You’re facing Madagascar, even though it’s too far away to see.

Trou-aux-Biches Beach is another recommended beach on our tour of Mauritius. Stop here, if only for a few pictures of this coast. And if you can, try our itinerary above.
