Boardwalk

Here’s a beach and community that got its name from a contest. In 1868, William Engemen developed the area just east of Coney Island and held a contest in 1878 to name it. A local businessman won with the name Brighton, from the resort community bearing the same name in England. Being so close to New York City and such a great beach, everyone knew the community would last. In fact, Brighton Beach has the largest Russian community in the United States! Many locals call Brighton, “Little Odessa” since a lot of them migrated long ago from that city in the Ukraine.

Dewey Beach, Delaware

by Dave Jackson

During the winter, this beautiful mile-long stretch of sand sleeps as it gains energy for the upcoming summer “season.” Residents know that come Easter, the Dewey Beach community goes through an extreme change. The DBC is a popular locale for locals, and by locals we mean retirees and cute co-eds. Resort eateries and restaurants offer a wide array of specialties from the catch of the day to French cuisine. Area shopping ranges from factory outlets to unique and artistic specialty shops.

Still home to the beautiful beaches that first brought its fame as well as a brand new boardwalk, Asbury Park is the perfect place for a visit anytime of year. Last year, the boardwalk had a nearly 70 percent vacancy rate. Now it’s maxed out, Gilmour said. Although located on the boardwalk, you will not find typical “beach art” at this venue. Exhibit A strives to provide innovative and outstanding contemporary art by some of the areas best emerging and established artists. The Beach Bar in the historic Convention Hall anchors one end of the boardwalk and offers sweeping ocean views in a trendy, yet sophisticated space that encourages lounging over a light meal or a sweet cocktail.

Located 17 miles south of Kahului Airport, 27 miles southeast of Lahaina, on the famous stretch of sand known as Wailea Beach sits the Grand Wailea Resort. It’s the sister hotel to the livelier Four Seasons at Hualalai, and both owned by Michael Dell of Dell Computers fame. They are really at opposite ends of the social scale, but that’s fine because they are both known to provide unerring service, world-class dining and gracious accommodations with amenities you just want to take back home with you.

Upscale certainly doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. In fact, there’s more fun at Grand Wailea than most resorts on Maui.
