Hidden Coves

Cabo San Lucas Arches

by Dave Jackson

Here, the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez meet in a swirl of waters teaming with life. It was these fertile waters that drew the pioneers who have built the Los Cabos of today. Cabo San Lucas is the generally agreed upon dividing line between the oceans of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific. The famous arch appear to separe the cool waters of the Pacific and the warm and quiet water of the Sea of Cortez. All along the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, you will discover miles of pristine beaches and sparkling blue water. You’ll find hidden coves, unusual rock formations, bird sanctuaries, and desert wilderness.

Lying 130 miles southeast of Nassau, small, boot-shaped CAT ISLAND is a relaxed and unspoiled place with sparkling beaches, small settlements and a few sizeable hills. The southern end of the island presents great opportunities for diving, with steep cliffs and offshore reefs, while the entire east coast , accessible only by dirt roads, offers a continuous strand of idyllic seaside, with hidden coves and rugged shores. Laid back and unhurried, Cat stretches for 50 miles from the north to the south, and is surrounded with white sand beaches, coconut palms and smiling faces.

Imagine a beach two miles long, positioned in such a way that it receives the afternoon trade winds, yet doesn’t experience any of the related high surf.

You’ve arrived at Manguinhos Beach, or Praia de Manguinhos.

This is one of the most interesting beaches in Buzios, both historically, and topographically. When we visited here, the beach was mostly empty at close to noon on a weekday. The kiteboarding school was awake, but no one was out on the water yet. A few children were playing in the silty sand that makes up almost half of this beach that had a very gradual angle to the deep.
