Grand Baie Beach Mauritius

If you had a paint brush, pallet and enough time, you probably couldn’t paint a picture more pristine than the beaches of Mauritius. And often we get ask what are our favorite beaches in this area of the globe - undoubtedly there are many world class beaches from Zanzibar on out to the islands of Mauritius.

And the people who arrived here first - maybe they imagined the rest of the ocean held such treasures? It makes it hard to think about work when you see those lazy palms and that brilliant white sand. Can we simply lay out in the sun for a bit?

With Mont Choisy close by, Grand Baie is a small peninsula on the northeast coast of the island. Just like the once sleepy town of Buzios, near Rio in Brazil, Grand Baie was a fisherman’s village not too long ago. And they were the ones that enjoyed the beautiful beaches you’ll find here. I love contrasts, and Mauritius doesn’t let you down. You have the brilliant white sand of the beaches and the just gorgeous emerald waters of the ocean. Drop in a few lovely coconut trees and this just might be paradise. But it wasn’t always that way, here. Grand Baie was almost left without hope of development. The wise people of the Mauritian government changed all that and now Grand Baie is the jewel of the island.

Just about everything is here. Boutique shops and sales of local crafts make this an ideal place to come learn about Mauritian culture. But that’s not all. Development has included many hotels and resorts which range from elite to bungalows with kitchenettes. They’ve included a marina complete with water sports, and with the Black River Gorges National Park near by, you will have plenty to do if all you do is spend your vacation on this part of Mauritius.

Grand Baie still has fishing boats so when you visit the beach here, remember that you’ll be sharing it with them. Other beaches we’ve reviewed, Pereybere, Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches do not have all the fishing boats. But the beach and water is simply breathtaking here. Shade is close by with the tall Casuarina trees which line almost the entire coastline. This beach will probably have fewer people in it because of the fishing boat situation. If that doesn’t bother you, you’re in for a wonderful day at the beach.

Sunset Boulevard comes into Grand Baie Beach and here you will find a few apartments and local eateries where you can hang out. It’s a real photo opportunity as the palms sway in the breeze and you can normally catch a small fishing boat in the view. Down toward the opposite end of the beach is a real fish market and at the right time of day you’ll see fishermen bringing in their catch.

Plage Grand Baie, MauritiusGrand Baie Beach is spectacular and has everything close to make coming here and enjoyable experience. The sand is soft, the water warm with light waves. The beach slopes gently so even small children can enjoy the water near shore. And if you get adventurous, you can walk quite a ways towards other nearby beaches. Take a camera and some water and you’re good for an experience you’ll never forget.

Final thought: It was here that in November of 1810 the British invaded Mauritius, called the Invasion of Ile de France.

Paradis Beach Mauritius

Theres and little beach at the Paradis Hotel on Mauritius that many don’t know about. It’s equally as beautiful as the rest, and they won’t run you off just because it’s at the hotel. In fact, we hear the Paradis is pretty nice. The luxury accommodation is all of a very high standard at Paradis Hotel & Golf Club, we would recommend the Junior Suites for a honeymoon, which give you a more spacious room, and a larger private balcony or terrace.

Some Junior Suites have a romantic beachfront location and are available at a supplement. Mauritius is best place for vacations so Mauritius hotels are as important as Mauritius. Someone should choose wisely from a long list of Mauritius hotels.

The Paradis Beach in Mauritius offers a comprehensive array of land and water sports including tennis, diving and deep sea fishing. If you snorkel, there is some good snorkeling near the outcroppings.

So hey… maybe you won’t stay at the beach all day?

Paradis Beach MauritiusThis is a fantastic beach with a honey of a resort on it. Imagine the veranda of your suite looking out over the calm ocean. This beach is nice and calm so it’s paradise true to its name. In some parts we did find the beach supplemented to build up around the suite-fronts, but other than that, it looks pretty natural.

You’ll note something right away that should be a plus to families and those who love the water and to be in it. The beach in some areas is exposed to the rocks. Now this is excellent for doing light snorkeling mainly because where the rocks are, fish love and there is no turbulent/sandy water - it’s crystal clear.

Le Morne/Le Paradis

Secondly, OK…think white sand and calm seas - well, maybe a gentle breeze to make you forget where you are. Blue skies and waves gently lapping up to let you know where you’re at. It’s a dichotomy that puts a smile on any face. What’s more is the people here are beyond friendly - they’re downright hospitable.

Flic en Flac Beach Mauritius

Flic-en-Flac beach is generally considered to be the most peaceful coastline on the island of Mauritius and offers some of the best snorkeling and diving sites around. It is situated on the west coast of the Island of Mauritius in the village of Flic-en-Flac and within five minutes walk from the public beach. Temperatures in Flic-en-Flac vary between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius all year round. Surrounding the island of Mauritius are emerald-blue sea waters and beautiful sandy beaches. The discovery of more regular surf spots around the world and the new sophisticated image of Mauritius have slowly killed its legend.

But despite the natural development of the region, Tamarin village is authentic; the houses and villas are almost the same and the people are as open and friendly than they were 40 years ago.

You’ll have an excellent holiday and will go back time and again to Mauritius.

Flic en Flac Beach Mauritius

All the private areas are owned by hotels and are regularly cleaned whereas the public beach is more untidy. Although the sand at the water’s edge is soft and fine, most of the rest of the beach has coarser sand and chunks of coral.

At the end of this popular beach is Pte aux Cannonniers home to the Club Med as well as a couple of well known hotels.

Mont Choisy villas and bungalows are close enough to the tourists hub of Grand Bay to be accessible on foot, by car or public transport but far enough to enjoy peace of mind and privacy sought by most visitors.

Flic en Flac Beach Mauritius

Golf enthusiasts will enjoy the excellent 18-hole course at Le Paradis Hotel at Le Morne (25 minutes by car). All beaches of Mauritius are public and not reserved by star hotels. The Beaches of Mauritius

One of the most exotic beach destinations we’ve reviewed is Mauritius. Sometimes, maybe what makes these places so attractive is that they are so hard to get to. It’s like digging for gold. When you do find it, it is a pleasure not many have experienced.

And you know where you are, a tad east of Madagascar but in an oh-so-tiny island in the middle of a big, Indian Ocean, which many parts still belong to the British. This area of the globe is blessed with beaches, not only on Mauritius, but the Seychelles and the Maldives as well. If you’re a jet setter, you could keep coming back!

Picture of MauritiusSo we invite you to take a few minutes and see the pictures and videos of one of our favorite spots on earth. You will be delighted and intrigued by what may be your next vacation destination. Enjoy.

Just north of the Tropic of Capricorn lies the island country of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It’s actually a few islands; a main island and three other islands, and about 22 largely uninhabited islands.

Mark Twain, who visited the island in 1896, so impressed by its beauty, said, “God first made Mauritius and from it, He created Paradise.”

Ileaux Benitiers MauritiusMauritius is striking because it once was a volcano. Extinct for some 100,000 years, you have peaks and rock strutting right down into the sea. And, as if icing on the wondrous landscape, a coral reef surrounds the islands.

Trivia: The Dodo bird, a large, flightless critter, once lived here. When the Dutch arrived around 1600, they killed off most of them. Their pets killed the rest and they were extinct by 1681. Yes, the Dutch sailors might have eaten a few, but it was actually something else that did them in.

In the 17th century, the Dutch cut down most of the ebony trees and sold them in Europe. This was home and food source for the Dodo bird. Along with the animals brought from the ships; rats, cats, dogs, pigs… these destroyed most of the nests.

The Dutch did bring one thing you may see while you’re on Mauritius: deer. The Sambhar Deer is actually a protected species. For pictures of deer and their habitat, we’ll post more pictures of Mauritius Sambhar shortly.

You’re here for the beaches, and we have a total of 13! If you’re anxious to go, know that December to April are generally hot and humid. June to November are the cooler, drier months. A cyclone could arrive during the warm season.

Let’s visit some of these wonders, shall we? NEXT >>

Blue Bay Beach - Mauritius

Plage Blue Bay Beach, Mauritius
Mahebourg is a larger town in Mauritius and Blue Bay Beach is close. Because of this, Blue Bay Beach can get kind of crowded on weekends. But during the week, you may have this long beauty all to yourself - well, almost.

Plage Blue Bay Beach, MauritiusBlue Bay is named for the crystal-clear ice blue water. This is one of those beaches in the world where it is simply hard to get a bad picture. The contrasts are simply amazing.

To get the best shots, make sure your camera is set to “beach” or “sun” or “outdoors”. Best times are mid morning and late afternoon. You can sneak in a great shot at other times, as well. Just make sure you don’t position yourself where you’ll get too much glare.

Next, compose your shot with plenty of contrast. For beach shots here, it’s easy. Get about half sand and half sky. And make sure you get some great sky - with few clouds. The blues are amazing here (and at other beaches as well).

Blue Bay Beach is located on the southeast side of the main island and is very easily accessible. When in Mahebourg, just ask the directions to Blue Bay… and take the camera.

Plage Blue Bay Beach, MauritiusBlue Bay - BEACH INDEX:

  • Sand - medium powder, all coral based.
  • Facilities - full.
  • Shade - trees line the coast here. Nice.
  • Sports - snorkeling, diving, and a few others - ask at hotels - their venue changes with seasons.
  • Notes - will get crowded on weekends.

We make our way to a small fishing village next. Hard work as a fisherman, but what a view! Let’s visit the Cap, Next! >>

Pereybere Beach - Mauritius

Along the coast (of course), between Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux is spectacular Pereybere Beach. The waters here are deeper than most of the lagoons that surround Mauritius. Because of that, there is a deeper blue hue to enjoy.

Pereybere Beach is a favorite among the young people. Because of this, it’s a “happin'” beach. Noted as the fun beach, Pereybere is fuller during school holidays and weekends. Sand soccer games and kite surfing along with some great swimming keeps everyone in shape on Pereybere. And this is perfect for small children. The sand slopes slowing into the water and the offshore coral reef protects this shore from anything bigger than a light wave. Indeed, you’re in paradise -even the ocean agrees and makes way for the majestic beach.

Because the water here is deep and crystal clear, it makes for great snorkeling. Make sure you stay along the rocky outcroppings as that is where the coral begins and fish hang out.

Most of the area close to the sandy beach will have a sandy bottom and pretty much nothing hangs out there. Also remember that there may be a little sea grass in the area. Nothing to worry about; just slightly creepy to walk through and can have some smaller species of fish if you want to venture there with your snorkel gear.

Again, Pereybere Beach is also excellent for families because the surf is normally calm. Take a gentle stroll down the long stretch of very white sand with your kids and enjoy the beauty of the deep blue ocean, puffy clouds, nice rush of gentle waves lapping at your feet, the crunching of silky sand under your toes, and the shimmering noise of the slow breeze snuggling the tropical palm trees the line the properties up to the beach area. Certainly Mark Twain was right in saying Mauritius is heaven on earth. And it’s true - yes, take the sunscreen, but explore, enjoy, breathe in the ocean air and thank God you made it to see on of His creations!

Things to think about when taking an outing to the beach when you’re with kids: Well, our experience is that they will let you know if you’re not taking the beach toys. Make sure you have some things they can dig in the sand with and form shapes on the beach. If one of the the resorts is having a kid’s day - it wouldn’t be a bad investment to let them have their fun in the sun, too. It just makes sense.

Above all, and we can’t seem to caution enough, take sunscreen and make sure you follow label directions. Don’t burn! It’s easy to do here because of the winds that blow along the beach area.

Pereybere Beach, Mauritius - BEACH INDEX:

  • Sand - medium to fine grain, coral based, some debris.
  • Facilities - close by.
  • Shade - casuarina and palm trees.
  • Sports - you’ll find lots going on here. Swim, snorkel, dive, kite boarding.
  • Notes - can get crowded

The Cerfs beach is next, and no, no “surf”ing here. Just ultimate paradise! >>
