Tonga - even the word is mysterious. And yet, this island-nation is about as friendly and relaxed as they get. Most visitors come here with a resort reservation in hand hoping to experience sun and sea and get unplugged from civilization. Of our journeys, we felt pretty far away from it all here. You know it really depends on how connected you want to be to back home. Sure, they have Internet here, but if you choose, you can remain disconnected from it all, with a little effort.
Still here in La Romana, the trendy, international hotspot for world polo matches and some of the best golf on the planet - this city grew out of the need for center of commerce for the surrounding sugar plantations. Gustavo Cisneros calls it his home away from home, and many of the jet set have homes along the sea. And why not? This area of Dominican Republic is growing at a rapid pace. Rock along with beautiful bays make for a heavenly setting. One area is specifically breathtaking.
The Beaches in the Maldives are spectacular. What you’ll find here is a great place to play Robinson Crusoe - tiny islands with soft, sandy beaches, sparkling turquoise lagoons and a bungalow on the beach. Crusoe would have been blown away by the comfort of some of the upscale resorts here.
Largely unexplored by Americans due to the lack of direct flights to the Maldives, the islands have long been the playground of Europeans seeking the awesome beaches and tranquil lagoons. But that’s probably why the Maldives and the Seychelles remain unspoiled for the most part.
