Fajara Beach Gambia

by Dave Jackson

At Cape Point there are a few hotels on a beach, arguably superior to the main Atlantic ocean beach, which is home to most of the hotels in the country. In town there are a few guest houses . Welcome to the Ocean View Apartments located on Fajara’s Leybato beach, in The Gambia, offering spectacular sea views unsurpassed by any other private, self-catering accommodation. The luxury apartments are situated on the waterfront just off the prestigious and exclusive Atlantic Boulevard. The hotel’s pool - “the smallest and the cleanest pool in The Gambia” - provides a focal point in the beautiful garden. Drinks and snacks are available around the pool throughout the day.

There have become more and more opportunities to play squash in or near hotels lately. Balls and rackets are to let for small amounts of money. The hotel is quite small with only about 20 or so rooms. All of the rooms are individually furnished with traditional .

We stayed at the Ngala Lodge Hotel during April 2005 and we could not have made a better choice. With only 13 Suites including a fabulous Penthouse Suite it is small, intimate and very friendly. Happily, the guy who showed us the hotel is still kicking around, so it seems justice has been served and the bumster threat has been eradicated from the Atlantic coast . There are four restaurants and three bars in the hotel serving a wide variety of food, each with a very different atmosphere. Breakfast and buffet dinner are served in the Kudula Restaurant under a canopy.

Bakau’s other focal point is the Kachikaly Crocodile Pool , a sacred site for the local people, who come here to pray, as among some tribes in Gambia crocs represent the power of fertility. Be that as it may, this is probably the closest you’ll come to crocodiles anywhere in Africa without getting your leg nipped off.At the southern end of the coastal strip at Kololi , a small wildlife reserve, Bijolo Forest Park , features a well-maintained series of trails through dense, shady vegetation, where you’ll have a fair chance of seeing monkeys and numerous species of bird.
