Since 1974, the island of Cancun has been developed from a small fishing village to an international resort attracting over 700,000 visitors each year. Booming Cancun City, across the Nichupte Lagoon on the mainland, was non-existent 20 years ago; it now supports a population of 250,000. We have seen all advertisements for tropical paradises and I can say from all the years we have traveled the world, that Playa Las Tortugas is as good as it gets. If you don’t have a car, the walk to the estuary is about a mile and half on the beach. Once at the estuay you can take a small water taxi across during daylight hours for about $1 per person. Average daily year-round temperatures range from highs of 80-85 degrees (perfect beach weather) to lows of 60-70 degrees(perfect sleeping weather).
In a small group you walk silently down the beach with only the stars and moon to light your way. You will feel as though you have traveled back in time. Within a thirty minute drive of Casi el Cielo there are a dozen beaches on the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Each has its own unique charm and each is well worth a visit. There are continuous series of coves and beaches that also include some growing small developments. The beach trail to the north along the cape offers tidepools for snorkeling and secluded blacksand coves of volcanic rock for luxuriating and sunbathing in complete privacy.
The Resort features after dark shows, Spanish and salsa lessons, beach soccer and pool volleyball. Supervised children’s programs offer youth recreation while parents explore life on the island. Hair dryers and irons are available and daily beach towels are provided. The rental of bikes, scooters and cars can be arranged at the front desk as well as tours to Mayan ruins, snorkeling trips, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, sky diving and golf. You will also enjoy the thirty foot pool right in front of the beautiful pink sand beach, surrounded by clear, calm Carribean waters. Swim year round, but consider packing a light sweater for the evenings in the winter months. Enjoy exploring miles of deserted, pristine whitesand beaches, stretching for miles to our north and south.
You can book a deep-sea fishing tour at almost any travel agency in the area or in most of the large hotels. AquaTours offers both shared or private tours. The Mexico hotels and resorts are oriented along the north coast and the eastern coast forming the shape of a “7″. A walk along the white sandy beach in any direction will take you along some of the most stunning landscapes to be found anywhere in the world. This area has upscale hotels, restaurants, and bars that back up to pristine beaches on the ocean such as Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas, and Playa Las Perlas. Playa Las Perlas is great for swimming and sunning while the other two beaches are great for water sports such as jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and parasailing.
Your scenic drive north through areas of old-growth jungle which border the coast is simply spectacular. Before arriving you might select a variety of fresh fruits and coconut products in stands along the road. Optionally arrange for transportation for you to and from the airport, and meals prepared by wonderful cooks. Its sad that the beach changed so much over the last years. When I was a kid it was possible to swim with the turtles at Playa Tortugas or see seahorses in the lagune across the street. Anyway its still an awesome spot and worth to go.
