There’s one island that people cannot keep quiet about off the southern coast of Thailand. It’s Phuket Island and today we’re going to visit the beaches here and give you a real perspective on what to expect - not something from the tourist brochures. The water here is warm and the color of the sea really can’t be lied about - it’s really pretty. And what makes it even prettier is that you have these limestone islands that jut out of the Andaman Sea and end at the shore with these beautiful crescent beaches.
I know it sounds like I’m either making it all up or that I work for the Thailand board of tourism, neither which is true. What you will find here is beautiful sand and greenery with those majestic looking hills that want so bad to be mountains… but God had other plans. And I think the terrain is striking. Glad I don’t run those kind of things.
Phuket is Thailand’s largest and you don’t have to worry about getting boat fare here although you could. There’s a bridge that connects it to the mainland and because of this you’ll find that it is much more developed than any of the other islands. In fact, if you really want a beach vacation off the beaten path, simply go to one of the many islands that are only accessible by boat. Plan to rough it a bit, but the experience is so rewarding, you’ll be back.
Phuket is located 850 km south of Bangkok.
There are some beaches here that are along a rocky shelf and the surf can be a tad rough which means you really shouldn’t swim here. Snorkeling can be a challenge, but experienced people won’t have a problem. Keep your eye on what you’re doing out there and have a buddy. The views underwater here and second to none. If you’re not into jumping in with a mask and fins, please don’t stay away. I found that these are excellent beaches to stroll and you can do so for literally hours as they stretch, some one into another past coconut groves and beautiful hanging gardens. The weather is fine; maybe a little humid, but you’ll be OK with some water (buy bottled) or drink from a coconut which we’ve found is to be the best for you nutritionally.
If you venture further underwater, say dive a bit, you will be rewarded with some of the best reefs in Southeast Asia. Just ask around or seek forums before you leave - people simply love the underwater life here in this part of the world. And with the warm water, you’ll feel good. Don’t forget your camera or invest in something that can actually take decent underwater pictures.
Restaurants are plentiful and I suggest really immersing in the Thai culture. And this won’t be the Thai food you have at home, or even any you’ve seen most likely. So venture out and experiment. Remember to be safe, but at the same time adventuresome. Rarely do you hear of anyone getting sick on this stuff. Instead they leave with wonderful memories of eating authentic Thai food from real hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
Enjoy the beaches here on Phuket Island. As you can see, they are gentle sloping and ease right into the azure waters. And for the most part, they aren’t crowded. For more information on Phuket and Thailand, please visit our sponsors.
