Byron Bay is a town replete with accommodation, but it is not necessarily cheap, since demand keeps up well with, and sometimes even outstrips, supply. Even backpackers accommodation tends to be rather more expensive than one might expect. Byron Bay is about 800 km north of Sydney and 200 km south of Brisbane. Cape Byron, a headland adjacent to the town, is the eastern-most point of the continent of Australia. IF BYRON Bay is a tribal place then the drums beat louder the closer you get to the beach. In the car park at the top of Jonson Street, as the pubs and restaurants begin to empty, the patter of hands on bongo drums rises above the crashing of waves at high tide.
Byron Bay is host to an increasingly high number of tourists, both from within Australia and overseas. The beaches are popular with both domestic and international tourists, including backpackers. Byron Bay is a great destination to base yourself whilst exploring this diverse region.
Byron Bay is also not short on places to eat out. There are plenty of takeaway bars serving a range of typical takeaway as well as healthy and vegetarian alternatives. For many the absolute highlight of Byron Bay is the beaches. Clean and unsullied, they are devoid of any building development, which allows you to fully appreciate their natural tranquility. Sydney to Byron Bay is 775km which takes over ten hours to drive. The road from Sydney is a nightmare with only gradual improvement.
Good views of humpback whales on their migration up the coast to Hervey Bay can be seen from the cape in July and on their return in September. We have been flying the ridges and soaring above the cliffs at the famous Cape Byron lighthouse for over 25 years now and the setting for your first hang gliding experience could not be better. Your first tandem flight can truly give you the freedom like only a quiet hang glider can and no previous experience is necessary.
This is a lovely secluded resort-style hotel located approximately 5km from the town centre close to a secluded beach. This was our third visit in approx two years so that’s saying something. It was walking distance into town, where there are plenty of shops . Byron is getting more and more of a baby boomer mentality - old dudes who like macraming yoghurt and doing pilates and discussing the best sushi place in town.
