Hawaiians believe that from such a place ancestor spirits continue to lovingly watch over the land and its people. The area is now carpeted with lush grass and bordered by native naupaka bushes. It was believed that a spirit left this world to join it ancestors. If there were no ancestors to greet the spirit, it would wander the earth causing mischief. Hawaiian legend states that the spirits of warriors left the earth to meet their ancestors by leaping from this rock.
There is a pod of dolphins that frequents the area - usually in the early morning hours. If you are lucky they will swim with you! There are some really nice beaches in this area. The shoreline at Makena Landing is mostly rocky with little sand.
Evidence of reef fatalities speckle the area with makeshift crosses. The snorkeling and diving in this area are unparalleled. Complimentary wireless Internet access is offered in the pool and lobby areas of the Sheraton Maui. Resort amenities include a fitness center, two seasonal pools, three tennis courts and a health spa where beachside massages and other spa treatments are offered. A little north to south current in this area also. Lessened around the southern turn toward the shore.
Some hotels about have children’s swim or play areas. Maui’s beaches are generally peaceable, but use good judgment and reasonable caution. The area around Black Rock is an exceptional place to start. The water is shallow, and the reefs are populated with exotic sea creatures that are used to the presence of people. Those shuttles only cover local area, so you will still need a rental car to get around the island.
Beautiful ocean-swept vistas and red rocky cliffs await. At mile marker 38 you will see a navigational light at the edge of a cliff. The ancient Maui hiking trail, called King’s Highway, begins at the beach and follows the beautiful coastline from the beach to Hana Town over a three-mile path. Beach amenities include restrooms, picnic facilities, showers, a paved lot and a campground. The beach is pristine and beautiful and has world class snorkeling at Maui Kaanapali Villas beach. There are 2 golf courses, upscale shopping at Whaler’s Village, and top-rated restaurants just a 1/4 mile away. You can also 5 drive minutes away from Lahaina, an old whaling port turned into a fun, shopping town, with Jazz clubs, and good restaurants.
My favorite place is on the beach in the sun, of course, at Black Rock, Maui. This beautiful, small coral reef on Ka’anapali Beach is hard to beat. I love this place because you can snorkel there every day where the turtles are. I want you to enjoy all that these beautiful islands have to offer. Just use common sense, ok.
As I was kicking out of the cove a humongous Honu (Green Sea Turtle) came up alongside of me and started swimming with me. I hope the same happens to you.
