A Review of Magens Bay Beach

by Dave Jackson

MAGENS BAY BEACH is long-stretched beach but it is quite narrow. The beach slopes somewhat. Over looking the Atlantic Ocean from the Mountain Top, you will be able to see Magens Bay beach, which ranked as one of the top ten (10) beaches in the world. You will also be able to see our sister island. Travel up Mafolie Hill through winding roadways and over verdant hills on the way to magnificent Magens Bay Beach. The curtain lifts far below and behind you.

Lifeguards are present on Magens Bay Beach, though given the calm waters here, you hopefully won’t need to rely on their services. It is nice to have them around, however, especially if the kids are taking to the water. Magens Bay Beach has been called one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic Magazine. It has a long and appealing history. With tranquil sandy beaches, including world-famous Magens Bay Beach, only a short drive away, you can swim and snorkel in the turquoise waters the Caribbean is renowned for. Within 15 minutes you can be in the middle of the best shopping in the Caribbean.

You’ll love your time at Villa Leonora, which is just a couple minutes’ drive to Magens Bay Beach and a short drive to town, shopping and nightlife. You’ll love your time at Pallina, which is just a few minutes’ drive to Magens Bay Beach and a short drive to town, shopping & nightlife.

Later, the local sugar cane plantations used Magens Bay as a shipping point for sugar, molasses and rum. The remains of an old brick road cane still be seen from the south end of the beach. Hundreds of couples, mostly from the United States and the United Kingdom, come to Sugar Bay each year to get married in their spectacular surroundings.

On the southern and northern ends of the beach are rock formations in the water that provide good snorkeling. However, it is allowed at Little Magens Beach which is a short swim away. A barrier reef at the inlet provides continual surf to watch and listen too and slows the surf entering the bay. The hotel has a water sports hut offering all types of water toys or relax on beach chairs on a palm lined beach.

There are only three hotels in the resort of which provide a number of joint facilities, although each provides its own pool and restaurant. The Club Galleon affords excellent scenic both to the sea and across the bay from its vantage point high on the steep sided cliffs. There is no public transportation to get here (though some hotels provide shuttle buses). If you’ve rented a car, from Charlotte Amalie take Route 35 north all the way.
