China Beach Vietnam

by Dave Jackson

China Beach is within cycling distance of Da Nang and it was this close proximity that led to it being used as an R&R destination for American soldiers during the war. It is a long beach that stretches all the way down to Cua Dai beach at Hoi An, though you will get a larger surf at China beach. It is a long beach that stretches all the way down to Cua Dai beach in Hoi An, though you will get a larger surf at China Beach. I know that China Beach is not the hardest in the country or the hardest thing at all. It was personal for me.

When you have a day that you want to dig your toes into the sand, tiny, little-known China Beach is a winner for those with kids. There are gorgeous views of the beach from almost any table within the colorful Asian decor of the restaurant.

But Hainan Island, just off the southern coast of China, has everything one could want in a tropical vacation – balmy beaches, gentle winds and vegetation creeping along the serene shores. Of course, this is less of a surprise to most Chinese – many flock there during the harsh winter months. For those interested in sunbathing out of the wind’s reach, there’s a small deck on top of the lifeguard equipment pick-up station. Outside the station, above beach level, grills and a picnic area are available on a first-come, first-served basis. By 1890 only 20 percent of the fishing community were Chinese, and their numbers continued to dwindle the rest of the century.

Safe haven for women without being oogled at. What is amazing about China Beach is not spectacular views, big surf or miles of uninterrupted beach, but the fact that it has yet to be developed! Along more than 20 kilometers (12 miles) of coastline, there are exactly three places to lay your head at the beach. China Beach is also the name of an American dramatic television series set at an evacuation hospital during the Vietnam War. The title refers to a beach in the city of Da Nang, Vietnam, that was nicknamed China Beach by unknown foreigners.

I spent 35 months in Vietnam, July 1964 to June 1967, and was at both China Beach at Da Nang and the beach at Nha Trang. I returned in February and Marcy 2009 and visited both beaches. China Beach is not a bad place to be if you are like the Mrines in the late 1960′s and early 1970′s and have no place else to go but it can not come close to Nha Trang beach. Both the beach and water at Nha Trang are very superior to China Beach.
