While in Hawaii, we enjoyed sitting on the Lanai and watching the ocean. The house was equipped with everything you need: coolers, boogie boards, beach chairs, etc. Unlike the beaches that are located on continents, with continental shelves, the Hawaiian Islands sit in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and are therefore exposed to stronger waves. Rip currents can form without notice, disappear, and then reappear. Boogie boarding is such a favorite sport and pastime in Hawaii - it’s incredible. The ultimate surfing spot on the Oahu’s west coast, Makaha is the wave ripping grounds for the surf fanatic and a pleasant beach to sit and watch surfers try to tame the ocean waves. Depending on the season, Makaha produces a wide range of wave heights, from a gentle 2 feet to a dangerous 10 feet. The best insider tip we received was what to do if you are caught in an undertow in the ocean. The water looked OK, but later we realized we should be looking for life guards or know what to do when caught in an undertow.
Ocean beaches offer opportunities for body and board surfing, boogie boards and swimming. Surfing is permited at town beaches outside of the “town operated” areas and hang gliders are restricted to White Crest Beach, and are allowed only before 9 AM and after 5 PM. To get to the trailhead, take Avenue U to the end and follow Ocean Vista Way up the hill, where you’ll discover amazing views of the cove. Walk on the lava along the ocean and enjoy the million plus dollar homes. The beach is usually not crowded except weekends and holidays.
If you go here early enough in the morning, you may be fortunate enough to see the mountains mirrored in the ocean like a glass reflection. There are lots of water activities and sports here that includes surfing, wind surfing, boating, kayaking, fishing, swimming, and more. The ocean is a great joy, but it can change from friend to foe in one breath. Treat it with respect, don’t snorkel or boogie board where you don’t see anyone else doing it (not counting young local guys who grew up on a boogie board!), and don’t turn your back on the waves! Cameron, Kapalua Resort’s founder, is credited with having the State of Hawai’i declare Honolua Bay as a “Marine Conservation District” in an effort to protect the island’s unique ocean resources. Fishing is strictly prohibited.
Users wishing to reserve a chair and transport it anywhere in Ocean City can check on availability and reservations at the O.C. Our building, Island Colony, is located at the corner of Seaside Avenue and Ala Wai Boulevard, which is two to three short blocks to the ocean. The Manhattan pier has the Oceanographic Teaching Station, which is equipped with a marine lab and aquarium. From the pier you can look out through the telescopes and get excellent views of Palos Verdes, Catalina, and the northern beaches.
