First of all I’m thinking of its magnificent gulf, providing a natural harbour, maybe the largest in the Mediterranean. The bus stop is 30 metres away and at a distance of 20 metres is the Artemis fishtaverna, with a magnificent view of the beach. The ancient theater from the Roman times is located very near here. And very near here, in 1820 the fantastic statue of Aphrodite of Milos was accidentally found by a farmer. Not far from Plaka you will find the largest catacombs outside of Rome and an ancient theatre with some interesting marble remains. It is believed that Plaka is built over the the Acropolis of ancient Milos. Steps lead to the ruined Venetian Castle ( Kastro ) whith some ruined houses that formed the outer walls of the fortress.
The Delfini which goes from Kypos and the catamaran owned by Captain Nikos will get you right up to the rocks. However, to the east and especially westward there are kilometers of rocky coast with white, luminous rocks and full of caves waiting to be explored. Further south lies Hydra with rocks to swim from vs. Its historical atmosphere, car free environment and sophisticated shopping and dining establishments make it a favorite of many well heeled weekend Greek visitors.
It is moreover probably one of the most photographed beach of the Aegean due to its unique landscape; horizontal white rocks penetrate into the sea forming small and huge hollows. It is a lunar landscape , truly unique. The scene is somehow unreal and leaves the visitor speechless. These cruises are a great way to experience the unique coastal landscape of the island that is normally inaccessible by land.
There are extensive mining holdings on the island which, though visible, have not (yet) ruined the landscape. It is an island for domestic Greek tourism and the more adventurous traveller. Crystal clear waters and a very impressive landscape. The road is bumpy, and an ugly factory stands 2km before the beach - don’t be misled, it is the right direction! There are several old windmills here, giving it a unique and distinctive landscape. This beach due to its off shore breezes is a good choice for windsurfers.
