Kauai’s Anini Beach Outdoor Paradise

by Dave Jackson

Anini Beach has a lot to offer all visitors to the area. Anini Mauka Kauai Vacation Rental Cottage is next to pristine Anini Beach: over two miles of white sand, completely surrounded by a reef so you can walk out into calm turquoise ocean! Anini Mauka is a one bedroom secluded cottage nestled in lush foliage, upscale Hawaiian decor, full bath and kitchen, all amenities. Kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing, and fishing are just a few of Anini Beach’s popular sports. In addition, the North Shore includes two world class golf courses at Princeville (just a short five minute drive up the road).

This makes Anini Beach one of Kauai’s safest beaches for swimming, windsurfing, fishing and kayaking year round. With shallow water - three to five feet deep - it’s also one of the best snorkel and dive locations on Kauai, for beginners or experts alike. Anini Kai, on the North Shore of Kauai, is a comfortable, family-friendly vacation rental that is only 100 steps away from beautiful, peaceful Anini Beach. The large back yard is great for kids to play frisbee or explore.

Snorkeling is good in the lagoon area created by the reef, but always check conditions first. A tranquil stretch of beach protected by Hawaii’s largest coral reef. Windsurfers enjoy these lake like waters and common winds. You can watch the windsurfers out beyond the reef.

After visiting several north shore beaches we settled in at Anini mainly because the enormous coral reef far offshore eliminated the surf which can be a problem at most Kauai beaches. Its also shallow, at least the parts we saw, and should be great if you have little ones. Very calm this morning - with fairly small waves breaking on the reef a few hundred yards offshore. Must be impressive in the winter when big waves march south across the Pacific, tripping on Hawaii as they pass. Anini Beach is a perfect year ’round location, with its waters being offered the protection of the largest reef in the Hawaiian Islands. Swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, kiteboarding, beachcombing and more can be enjoyed here.

During times of low tide — usually occurring around the full moon of the summer months — much of the reef is exposed. Anini is inarguably the windsurfing mecca on Kauai, even for beginners, and it’s also attracting the newest athletes of wave riding: kiteboarders. Beautiful beach, protected by offshore reef. Probably the safest campsite in Kauai, there is cell coverage (at least with Verizon) and I believe there is an pay phone in case of emergencies if no cell phone is available. Anini is completely enclosed by a reef and so is safe for toddlers and parents alike. Just walk straight out for a hundred yards in the warm blue ocean!
